Ohio’s Allergy Season Intensifies as Wind-Pollinated Trees Spread Pollen for Miles

CLEVELAND — Allergy sufferers in Ohio are facing a tougher-than-usual season as wind-pollinated trees release massive amounts of pollen, carried for miles by spring breezes. Experts warn that shifting weather patterns and longer allergy seasons are making symptoms worse for many.

Why This Allergy Season Feels Worse

Most trees in Ohio rely on wind rather than insects to spread pollen, producing far more than needed to ensure reproduction. “Wind-pollinated trees release excessive pollen because they can’t guarantee where it will land,” explained Dawn Gerlica, a senior horticulturist at Holden Arboretum. This means pollen travels farther, affecting more people.

Warmer temperatures have also altered Ohio’s tree diversity, though not drastically. “We’re seeing some species shift regions, but the bigger issue is the unpredictability of seasons,” said Dr. JP Lopes, an allergy immunologist at Case Western Reserve University. “Allergy seasons are overlapping and lasting longer, which increases exposure.”

Simple Ways to Reduce Exposure

For those struggling with sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion, Dr. Lopes recommends:

  • Tracking pollen counts using apps to plan outdoor activities.
  • Wearing sunglasses and a hat to shield eyes from pollen.
  • Changing clothes and showering after being outside to remove allergens.

Despite her own allergies, Gerlica, who has worked at the arboretum for nearly 40 years, refuses to stay indoors. “I love being outside,” she said. “I’m not going to give that up just for an allergy.”

Allergy-Friendly Tree Alternatives

For gardeners who want to plant trees without worsening allergies, experts suggest insect-pollinated varieties like:

  • Redbud
  • Tulip trees
  • Magnolias

These species produce heavier, stickier pollen that doesn’t travel as far, making them a better choice for allergy-prone households.

As pollen levels remain high, Ohioans are urged to take precautions—because while spring brings blooming trees, it also brings relentless sneezing for many.
