Ohio Roofing Crisis: Severe Weather Leaves Homeowners Vulnerable to Damage and Scams

COLUMBUS, Ohio — After months of relentless storms, Ohio homeowners are facing a roofing crisis, with contractors overwhelmed by demand—and scammers taking advantage of the chaos.

A Perfect Storm for Roof Damage

Tony West, president of Roof Medic and a 20-year industry veteran, said this year’s extreme weather has been unprecedented.

“We’ve been buried with storm damage,” West said. “It started with record snowfall this winter, followed by sub-zero temperatures that left snow sitting on roofs for weeks. Then came spring storms—high winds, hail—and now we’re playing catch-up.”

The damage isn’t always visible. West urges homeowners to get professional inspections, even if their roofs appear intact. “If you suspect any damage, don’t wait. Early detection can prevent costly repairs later.”

Scams on the Rise

With demand soaring, unscrupulous contractors are exploiting desperate homeowners. Judy Dollison, president of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for Central & Southeastern Ohio, warns of deceptive tactics.

“Some companies exaggerate damage or even create it,” Dollison said. “They might show you photos of another roof, claiming it’s yours, just to sell unnecessary repairs.”

The BBB advises homeowners to:

  • Research thoroughly – Check company reviews on the BBB website.
  • Avoid pressure tactics – Legitimate contractors won’t rush you into signing.
  • Consult insurance first – Verify coverage before committing to repairs.

Navigating the Chaos

West acknowledges the roofing industry has become “storm-driven,” with many companies prioritizing emergency jobs over routine maintenance.

For homeowners, vigilance is key. “Take your time,” Dollison stressed. “A bad decision now could cost thousands later.”

As Ohio braces for more volatile weather, experts say proactive inspections and cautious hiring are the best defenses against both storm damage and scams.
