“She Moves with Color”: Columbus Unveils Vibrant New Mural Reimagining Short North’s Iconic Mona Lisa
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Short North Arts District is set to welcome a bold new landmark next month as local artist Mandi Caskey, known professionally as Miss Birdy, unveils her striking 1,000-square-foot mural, “She Moves with Color.” The vibrant piece reinterprets the neighborhood’s beloved Mona Lisa mural, blending nostalgia with contemporary energy to reflect the evolving spirit of Columbus.
A Fresh Take on a Local Icon
The original Mona Lisa mural, painted by Brian Clemons in 1990, has long been a defining feature of the Short North. Caskey’s reimagined version retains the essence of the classic while infusing it with dynamic movement and vivid hues.
“I wanted to create something that feels both familiar and fresh,” Caskey said. “This piece honors the past while capturing the energy of the Short North today—it’s alive, evolving, and full of color.”
Stretching across the second-story south facade of 800 N. High St., the mural transforms a well-known building into a visual celebration of the district’s artistic identity.
Art as a Community Anchor
Public art plays a crucial role in shaping Columbus’ cultural landscape, according to Mitch Menchaca, President and CEO of the Greater Columbus Arts Council.
“Murals like this don’t just beautify a space—they create a sense of place,” Menchaca said. “This project bridges history and innovation, making art accessible to everyone who walks through the Short North.”
Betsy Pandora of the Short North Alliance echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the mural’s role in reinforcing the neighborhood’s reputation as an arts hub.
“The Mona Lisa has always been a symbol of the Short North,” Pandora said. “By reimagining it, we’re ensuring that public art remains a living, breathing part of our community.”
A Collaborative Effort
The project was made possible through a partnership between the Greater Columbus Arts Council, Short North Alliance, Crawford Hoying, and the Ohio Arts Council. Their collective support highlights the city’s commitment to fostering creative expression.
Public Celebration Planned
Residents and visitors will have the chance to celebrate the mural’s debut during Public Art is Calling, a special event on Tuesday, June 24, at the Moxy Hotel. The festivities kick off at 4 p.m. with a community gathering, followed by a panel discussion featuring local artists.

As Columbus continues to embrace public art as a cornerstone of urban life, “She Moves with Color” stands as a testament to the city’s vibrant, ever-evolving creative spirit.
