CLEVELAND, OHIO — Health officials in Huron County have confirmed a new case of rabies in a bat, raising the statewide tally to eight so far this year. The Ohio Department of Health notified local authorities on May 6 after a bat collected near a Bellevue residence tested positive for the deadly virus.

This marks Ohio’s eighth rabies case in 2025, continuing a trend of bat-related infections. While no human exposures have been reported in this instance, health officials are urging residents to remain vigilant. Rabies, though preventable, is almost always fatal if left untreated.

“Finding a bat with rabies is not uncommon in Ohio,” Huron County Public Health stated in a release on Tuesday. “Bat strain rabies is present throughout the state, and cases have been identified in nearly every county over the years.”

What You Need to Know About Rabies

Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the nervous system, leading to brain disease and death if untreated. It is primarily transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals, though exposure can also occur through contact with saliva to open wounds or mucous membranes.

According to health officials, immediate medical attention is crucial for anyone who suspects exposure. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), a treatment involving wound care, human rabies immune globulin, and a series of four to five vaccines, is nearly 100% effective when administered promptly.

Ohio’s Rabies Trends

This year’s cases have been confined to bats, with positive tests recorded in Wood, Columbiana, Tuscarawas, Warren, Clinton, Hamilton, and Miami counties. The state has seen a decline in rabies cases compared to previous years. In 2025, Ohio reported 19 confirmed cases, down from 43 in 2024.

Despite the decrease, rabies remains a significant public health concern. The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) estimates that more than 20,000 bite exposures and 1,000 non-bite exposures occur annually, potentially exposing over 21,000 people to the virus. Non-bite exposures are particularly concerning in scenarios where bats are found in rooms with children, sleeping individuals, or those with sensory or mental impairments.

Protecting Yourself and Your Pets

Health experts emphasize the importance of prevention. Here are key steps to reduce the risk of rabies exposure:

  • Avoid contact with wildlife, especially bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes.
  • Keep pets vaccinated against rabies and supervise them outdoors.
  • Secure your home by sealing potential entry points for bats and other animals.
  • Seek medical attention immediately if bitten or scratched by an animal.

A Global Concern

Rabies is not just an Ohio issue; it’s a global health threat. According to the World Health Organization, rabies causes tens of thousands of deaths worldwide each year, with most occurring in Africa and Asia. However, vaccination programs and public awareness campaigns have significantly reduced cases in developed countries like the United States.

Staying Informed

Residents can stay updated on rabies cases and prevention tips through the Ohio Department of Health’s Zoonotic Disease Program. Health officials encourage anyone who finds a bat in their home or suspects an exposure to contact their local health department immediately.

While the recent case in Huron County serves as a reminder of rabies’ ongoing presence, prompt action and awareness can prevent tragedy. Vigilance, vaccination, and education remain the best defenses against this preventable but deadly disease.
