Illinois Man Faces Charges for Allegedly Evading $22,000 in Ohio Turnpike Tolls

An Illinois man is facing serious legal consequences after allegedly avoiding over $21,000 in tolls on the Ohio Turnpike over a two-year period. The case, which has drawn attention to the issue of toll evasion, highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to crack down on such offenses.

Moath Musamih, a 39-year-old resident of Orland Park, Illinois, was indicted on April 21 by a grand jury on charges of grand theft. The indictment followed an investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), conducted in collaboration with the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission (OTIC). According to officials, Musamih is accused of using the Ohio Turnpike without paying tolls from April 2024 to April 2026, evading a total of $21,991 in fees.

The Ohio Turnpike, a 241-mile stretch that runs through 13 counties in northern Ohio, is a vital transportation route for both commercial and personal vehicles. To combat toll evasion, officials have been working to improve enforcement measures, including addressing the use of fake, obscured, or removed license plates.

If convicted, Musamih could face significant penalties, including a fine of up to $10,000 and a prison sentence of up to 18 months. Additionally, a Freightliner Cascadia semitractor linked to the case may be subject to criminal forfeiture.

Musamih is scheduled to appear at the Williams County Court of Common Pleas on May 11 at 2 p.m. for his arraignment. The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of toll evasion and the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and toll authorities to ensure compliance.

In a statement, the OSHP emphasized its commitment to maintaining safety and accountability along the Ohio Turnpike. “We will continue to work with our partners to deter toll evasion and related offenses, ensuring the integrity of the Ohio Turnpike for all users,” the release stated.

This case underscores the broader challenges faced by toll authorities nationwide as they seek to balance convenience for drivers with the need to collect revenue for infrastructure maintenance and improvements. With technological advancements and increased vigilance, officials hope to reduce toll evasion and its impact on public resources.

As Musamih prepares to face the legal system, the spotlight remains on the importance of adhering to toll regulations and the potential repercussions for those who choose to circumvent them.
