Cincinnati Public Schools Opens Safe Sleep Lot to Aid Homeless Families
Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to address homelessness among families by launching the Safe Sleep Lot, a secure overnight parking facility designed to provide dignity and support to those living in their vehicles. The initiative, part of the district’s Project Connect program, is believed to be the first of its kind in Ohio and the first nationwide to be entirely managed by a school district.
The Safe Sleep Lot offers more than just a safe place to park. It serves as a gateway to essential resources, including emergency housing, food, and support services. Families staying at the lot gain access to restrooms, meals provided by the Freestore Foodbank, and connections to CPS’s WRAP Center and other community organizations. Within 24 hours, families can be verified for housing assistance, expediting their transition to permanent shelter.
A Response to a Growing Crisis
The initiative was born out of a pressing need to address housing instability among families, a challenge that disrupts employment and jeopardizes children’s education. Delays in accessing shelters due to verification processes often leave families with nowhere to turn. The Safe Sleep Lot aims to eliminate these barriers by offering immediate support while families work toward long-term stability.
“This lot is a bridge,” said Rebeka Beach, manager of Project Connect. “It is a bridge to emergency housing, to shelter placement, and to long-term stability. When children can sleep safely and come to school ready to learn, we are not just meeting basic needs—we are changing the trajectory of their lives.”
A Community-Driven Solution
CPS leaders drew inspiration from similar programs in California and collaborated with community partners to create a localized model tailored to Cincinnati’s needs. The Cincinnati Board of Education, district leadership, and local organizations rallied behind the initiative, securing funding and endorsing the project.
“This work reflects who we are as a district,” said CPS Superintendent Shauna Murphy. “When we say we are here for kids, we mean all kids. The Safe Sleep Lot is about meeting families where they are, removing barriers to learning, and making sure every child has the support they need to succeed in school and in life.”
The project has also garnered praise from community leaders. “This is an example of what can happen when a community comes together to address a real problem,” said Brandon Craig, president of the Cincinnati Board of Education. “The Board is proud to support innovative solutions like this that prioritize student well-being and connect families to the resources they need for long-term stability.”
A Temporary Fix with Long-Term Goals
While the Safe Sleep Lot is a temporary solution to an urgent crisis, district officials plan to expand its offerings in the future. Planned enhancements include the construction of a pergola for communal use, program expansion, and strengthened partnerships to improve services for families.
The initiative underscores CPS’s commitment to holistic support, recognizing that stable housing is foundational to academic success. By addressing the immediate needs of homeless families, the district is fostering an environment where children can thrive.
As homelessness remains a critical issue across the nation, Cincinnati’s Safe Sleep Lot serves as a model for how communities can innovate to support their most vulnerable members.
