OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist Hospital Earns Prestigious Level III-N Trauma Center Status
Pickerington, Ohio — OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist Hospital has achieved a major milestone, becoming the first and only Level III-N Trauma Center in Fairfield County. The American College of Surgeons granted the designation after a rigorous verification process, solidifying the hospital’s ability to provide advanced neurotrauma care to the community.
A Rigorous Path to Recognition
The hospital initially received provisional trauma center status in 2024. To maintain its standing, it underwent an intensive two-day evaluation by expert trauma surgeons from the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. The review confirmed that Pickerington Methodist met all required standards for trauma care.
“Since our provisional approval, our team has delivered lifesaving care to countless patients in Pickerington and surrounding areas,” said Dr. Thanh Nguyen, medical director of trauma at the hospital. “This achievement reflects our commitment to excellence in trauma medicine.”
What Level III-N Trauma Status Means
A Level III-N Trauma Center must meet strict criteria, including:
- 24/7 availability of surgical services with board-certified neurosurgeons
- Capacity to manage all trauma cases, from initial assessment to intensive care
- Support for rural and community hospitals by stabilizing critically injured patients before transfer
“This wasn’t an overnight success,” said Kevin Lutz, president of Pickerington Methodist. “It took years of planning, teamwork, and dedication across every department—emergency care, surgery, imaging, and rehabilitation—to reach this milestone.”
Why Trauma Designations Matter
Trauma centers are classified by their capabilities and resources:
- Level I: Highest level, with specialized trauma care and research
- Level II: Comprehensive trauma services
- Level III-N: Advanced neurotrauma care, bridging gaps between Levels II and III
Pickerington’s new status ensures faster, more specialized care for brain and spinal injuries, reducing the need for patient transfers to distant hospitals.
A Win for Fairfield County
As the only trauma center in the county, OhioHealth Pickerington Methodist is now a critical hub for emergency care. The designation strengthens the region’s healthcare infrastructure, offering quicker response times and better outcomes for trauma patients.
