University of Dayton Runner Overcomes Life-Threatening Illness to Shatter Records
As graduation season sweeps across campuses nationwide, University of Dayton senior Owen Pukys is reflecting on a college journey that was anything but ordinary. The cross-country runner’s comeback story—one marked by resilience and determination—has become an inspiration to his teammates, coaches, and anyone facing seemingly insurmountable odds.
Pukys, a standout athlete, was poised for a stellar junior season when a devastating health crisis derailed his plans. What began as mononucleosis quickly escalated into a life-threatening ordeal. Complications from the illness landed him in the hospital for nearly a month, where he was placed in a medically induced coma. Bacterial infections and a liver abscess compounded his struggles, forcing him to sit out the entire season and leaving him unsure if he’d ever run again.
“The physical recovery was grueling, and mentally, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep going,” Pukys recalls. “But I decided if I was going to come back, I’d give it everything I had.”
That determination paid off. In his senior season, Pukys not only returned to the track but also achieved the best performances of his career. He kicked off the season by winning his first race, followed by breaking the school record in the 8K. His season culminated in a third-place finish at the Atlantic-10 Conference championships, a testament to his grit and perseverance.
“My goals shifted from just winning races to becoming a better version of myself,” Pukys said. “Focusing on the process rather than the outcome has made all the difference.”
His coach, David Dobson, describes Pukys as “relentless.” Dobson vividly recalls the emotional toll of watching his athlete fight for his life. “Walking through those hospital halls, I didn’t know how to help him,” Dobson shared. “To see him not only recover but thrive—it’s been incredible.”
Pukys credits his support system, particularly the University of Dayton community, for helping him through his recovery. “The UD family was huge for me,” he said. “Their encouragement kept me going.”
As graduation approaches, Pukys is focused on celebrating the highs and lows of his journey. Dressed in a cap and gown, he reflects on the lessons learned from his ordeal. “Just because you’re slower doesn’t mean you’re less of a person,” he said. “It’s about striving to be your best self, no matter the circumstances.”
His story has left a lasting impact on his teammates and coaches. Dobson admits he’s had emotional moments reflecting on Pukys’ journey. “He’s been through so much, and what he means to this program—it’s immeasurable.”
As Pukys prepares to leave the University of Dayton, he hopes his story inspires others to persevere through their own challenges. “Life throws curveballs, but it’s how you respond that defines you,” he said.
With a record-breaking season under his belt and graduation on the horizon, Owen Pukys is proof that resilience and determination can lead to extraordinary triumphs.
