Historic USS Cleveland Community Day Draws Crowds as Navy Warship Prepares for Commissioning

CLEVELAND, OH — Northeast Ohio residents gathered in excitement over the weekend for a unique opportunity to tour the USS Cleveland, the Navy’s newest Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship, and meet its crew. The event, hosted by the USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation, marked a historic moment as Ohio prepares to commission its first-ever Navy warship.

The Community Day, held on Sunday, featured family-friendly activities, food, and drinks, while offering locals a firsthand look at the ship and its operations. Attendees also had the chance to engage with the Cleveland Sea Cadets, who demonstrated nautical knot-tying and shared insights about maritime careers.

“Our goal is to connect with the community, inspire young people, and spark interest in serving,” said Lt. Cmdr. David Sheets of the Cleveland Sea Cadets.

One of the highlights of the day was a special initiative by the Military Veteran Resource Network, which encouraged visitors to sign cards for the USS Cleveland’s crew. Some cards featured a striking Cleveland-themed mural that adorns the ship’s interior, adding a personal touch from the community.

The USS Cleveland, manned by a crew of approximately 115 sailors, is set to be christened on May 16th in a ceremony that will mark a historic milestone for Ohio. Following the event, the ship will depart for its permanent home port in Florida.

Despite its eventual relocation, the Greater Cleveland community remains committed to supporting the ship and its crew. The USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation has outlined plans to provide ongoing assistance, including “welcome aboard” sea bags for new sailors, care packages, and an annual Thanksgiving dinner for crewmembers.

The Foundation also aims to honor significant moments in sailors’ lives and foster a lasting connection between the ship and its namesake city. Long-term plans include bringing the USS Cleveland back to Ohio after its retirement, potentially transforming it into a floating museum to commemorate all four U.S. Navy ships named Cleveland.

As the USS Cleveland prepares to embark on its journey, Ohioans are reflecting on the pride and legacy tied to this historic vessel.
