Ashton Swinford Makes History with Fifth Consecutive Win at Cleveland Marathon Amid Challenging Conditions

CLEVELAND — Over 13,000 runners laced up their shoes this past weekend for the University Hospitals Cleveland Marathon, an annual event that celebrates endurance and community spirit. The races, which included a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, and a challenge series, drew participants from across the country, including 3,700 first-time runners tackling the half and full marathon distances. However, this year’s event was not without its challenges, as competitors faced unseasonably hot and humid weather.

Ashton Swinford, a 33-year-old runner from Hudson, Ohio, stole the spotlight by clinching her fifth consecutive victory in the women’s full marathon. Swinford crossed the finish line with an impressive time of 2 hours, 44 minutes, and 36 seconds, cementing her place in race history as the first runner to achieve five straight wins.

“It’s always an honor to compete in Cleveland,” Swinford said after the race. “The support from the community and the organizers makes this event feel like home.”

On the men’s side, Jacob Kocis from Versailles, Kentucky, emerged victorious with a time of 2:21:50. Kocis, who participated in his first Cleveland Marathon, praised the course and the camaraderie among runners.

The weekend’s races were marked by unusually high temperatures and humidity, testing the endurance of even the most seasoned athletes. Many runners, including Cleveland resident Jill Dematteis, found the heat particularly challenging.

“The heat got to me a bit,” Dematteis admitted. “It’s been a cooler spring, so running in these conditions was tough. But it’s all part of the experience.”

Race organizers and medical teams were well-prepared for the adverse weather conditions. University Hospitals staff provided critical support throughout the event, ensuring runners had access to ice, hydration stations, and medical care. Jack Staph, the executive race director, commended the medical team for their swift response.

“University Hospitals really stepped up this year,” Staph said. “Their medical tents were a lifesaver for many runners. People came in needing help and left feeling strong again.”

The Cleveland Marathon, now in its 49th year, continues to grow in popularity, attracting runners of all ages and skill levels. Organizers are already looking ahead to next year’s milestone event, which will celebrate the race’s 50th anniversary. Scheduled for May 15-16, 2027, the anniversary marathon promises to be an even bigger celebration of endurance and community.

For those interested in this year’s results, a full list of times and finishes can be found on the Cleveland Marathon’s official website.

As the city prepares to mark half a century of marathon history, the 2026 event is expected to draw even more participants and spectators, solidifying its place as one of the Midwest’s premier running events.
