Breast cancer remains one of the most common and deadliest cancers among women in Nigeria. While not all cases are preventable, many lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk.

Here are 10 smart steps every woman (and man) should take to help prevent breast cancer and live a healthier life.

1. Do Monthly Breast Self-Exams
Early detection saves lives. Check your breasts for lumps, pain, or changes in shape once a month, preferably a few days after your menstrual period.

2. Get Regular Screenings
Mammogram every 1–2 years if you’re over 40
Clinical breast exams at your hospital or health center
Early screening catches breast cancer before it spreads.

3. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Obesity increases estrogen levels, which is linked to breast cancer.
Exercise regularly and avoid excessive weight gain, especially after menopause.

4. Eat a Cancer-Fighting Diet

Focus on:
Leafy vegetables (ugu, spinach)
Tomatoes, garlic, and turmeric
Fresh fruits (pawpaw, watermelon, berries)
Low-fat dairy and fish (omega-3 rich)
Avoid excess sugar, fried foods, and processed meat.

5. Limit Alcohol Intake

Even small amounts of alcohol can raise your risk.
Cut down or stop alcohol to reduce cancer-triggering hormones.

6. Exercise at Least 30 Minutes a Day
Physical activity boosts immunity and regulates hormones.

Try brisk walking, skipping, dancing, or home workouts.

7. Avoid Unnecessary Hormonal Treatments
Prolonged use of birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy can slightly raise risk. Discuss options with your doctor.

8. Quit Smoking

Tobacco is a major cancer trigger. It damages healthy cells and weakens your body’s defense.

9. Breastfeed If You Can

Breastfeeding for at least 6 months can protect both mother and child from multiple diseases, including breast cancer.

10. Know Your Family History

If your mother, sister, or aunt had breast cancer, your risk is higher.

Inform your doctor, you may need earlier and more frequent checkups.

Preventing breast cancer starts with awareness and small daily actions. Eat well, move more, avoid harmful substances, and check your body often.

Knowledge is power. Share this with every woman you know.
