Apple’s High-Profile Camera Software Hire Faces Legal Storm Over Fraud Allegations

SANTA CRUZ, California — What began as a triumphant career move for a celebrated app developer has spiraled into a bitter legal battle, casting a shadow over Apple’s recent high-profile hiring. Sebastiaan de With, the co-founder of acclaimed photography app Halide, joined Apple’s design team in January 2026 amid fanfare—but newly surfaced court documents allege he was fired from his own company months earlier over accusations of financial misconduct and intellectual property theft.

The lawsuit, filed in California’s Santa Cruz Superior Court by Lux Optics co-founder Ben Sandofsky, paints a starkly different picture from the narrative of a seamless transition to Apple. Sandofsky claims de With misused over $150,000 in company funds for personal expenses and took proprietary code to Apple, raising questions about corporate ethics, Silicon Valley hiring practices, and how much the tech giant knew about the allegations before bringing him onboard.

From Indie Darling to Apple’s Inner Circle

De With’s rise in the tech world was emblematic of the indie developer dream. Lux Optics, the studio he co-founded with Sandofsky, gained a cult following for Halide, an iPhone app that unlocked professional-grade manual controls for mobile photographers. Praised by critics and users alike, Halide became a staple for enthusiasts seeking DSLR-like precision—a testament to the duo’s technical prowess and design sensibilities.

Apple took notice. By mid-2025, the Cupertino giant had reportedly engaged in acquisition talks with Lux Optics, signaling interest in absorbing the team behind one of iOS’s most sophisticated third-party camera apps. When negotiations stalled, Apple pivoted, hiring de With directly—a move initially framed as a strategic poaching of top talent. But Sandofsky’s lawsuit alleges a far messier departure: de With was terminated in December 2025 for alleged financial improprieties, months before his Apple onboarding.

Allegations of Fraud and Corporate Espionage

The 27-page complaint, first reported by The Information, accuses de With of diverting company funds to cover personal expenses, including luxury travel and undisclosed personal projects. More explosively, Sandofsky claims de With absconded with proprietary Lux Optics source code and confidential materials upon joining Apple—a potential violation of intellectual property laws if proven.

“This wasn’t a clean break. It was a betrayal,” a source close to Lux Optics told [Your News Outlet], speaking on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing litigation. “The idea that Apple might now have access to our trade secrets is devastating.”

De With’s legal team has vehemently denied the allegations. In a statement, his attorney called the lawsuit a “transparent attempt to weaponize Apple’s name for leverage,” arguing that Sandofsky’s claims are “baseless and motivated by personal animus.” Apple, for its part, has remained silent, declining to comment on whether it was aware of the allegations during de With’s hiring process.

Broader Implications for Tech Talent Wars

The case underscores the cutthroat competition for elite software engineers in an industry where proprietary knowledge is currency. Apple, Google, and Meta routinely absorb smaller studios or hire their teams to bolster in-house capabilities—a practice critics say incentivizes IP gray areas.

“When a giant like Apple hires from a startup, due diligence is critical,” said Dr. Elena Rodriguez, a Stanford University tech ethics researcher. “If these allegations hold up, it could expose systemic flaws in how Silicon Valley vets high-stakes hires.”

Legal experts note that if Sandofsky proves de With shared Lux’s code with Apple, the iPhone maker could face secondary liability. However, proving intent or corporate complicity would be an uphill battle.

What’s Next for Lux and Apple?

For now, Lux Optics continues to operate Halide without de With, though the scandal has left the company’s future uncertain. Meanwhile, Apple’s silence suggests confidence in its legal position—or a calculated bet that the story will fade.

The case also reignites debates about accountability in tech’s “acqui-hire” era, where startups often dissolve after losing key personnel. “This isn’t just about one developer,” remarked venture capitalist Leah Kim. “It’s about whether the industry’s talent wars are fostering a culture of disregard for ethical boundaries.”

As the lawsuit unfolds, one thing is clear: de With’s journey from indie innovator to Apple insider has taken a turn neither side anticipated. Whether it ends in vindication or reputational ruin remains to be seen—but for now, the tech world is watching closely.

Apple declined to comment for this story. Sebastiaan de With maintains his innocence, and the court has yet to set a trial date.
