Ethiopia’s Special Operations Command Celebrates 65 Years of Service with Major Exhibition

Hawassa, Ethiopia — A significant photographic exhibition celebrating the 65th anniversary of Ethiopia’s Special Operations Command has officially opened in the city of Hawassa. This event serves as the focal point of the celebrations honoring the elite military unit’s rich history and operational accomplishments.

The captivating exhibition details the Command’s evolution since its inception, featuring pivotal milestones, notable operational successes, and an impressive array of modern military equipment. The gathering highlighted the unit’s growing capabilities and its lasting commitment to national security.

The ceremony was inaugurated by Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, the Chief of General Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces. The presence of senior military officials and regional dignitaries underscored the event’s national significance.

Among the notable attendees were Deputy Chief of Staff General Abebaw Tadesse, Ethiopian Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Yilma Merdasa, Special Operations Command Commander Lieutenant General Shuma Abdata, and Hawassa City Mayor Tiratu Beyene. Their participation highlighted the unity and shared purpose of Ethiopia’s defense community.

In a powerful speech, Major General Abebaw Sayid, Deputy Commander for Operations of the Special Operations Command, reflected on the unit’s role in safeguarding the nation. He emphasized the extraordinary sacrifices made by the Command to maintain the country’s sovereignty and security.

“The Command has played an essential role in ensuring our nation’s safety. We have remained resilient in the face of adversity, overcoming complex challenges to protect our homeland,” he stated.

The anniversary serves not only as a time for reflection on past achievements but also as a catalyst for reinforcing operational readiness within the unit. Major General Abebaw stressed the importance of addressing any shortcomings to ensure that the Command remains prepared for future challenges.

“This anniversary allows us to evaluate our capabilities and enhance our operational readiness for any missions ahead,” he said.

In honor of those who have served, officials acknowledged the sacrifices made by Command members. They noted that the unit has “written history in blood and bone” while defending Ethiopia’s sovereignty. This poignant tribute resonates deeply with those who understand the hardships faced by the military.

As part of the anniversary festivities, a commemorative book was launched documenting the Command’s 65-year journey. A panel discussion is set to follow, delving into themes and historical insights presented in the publication.

During the event, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula unveiled the new emblem of the Command, signifying a renewed commitment to national defense. A documentary film outlining the Command’s historical trajectory alongside its current operational capabilities was also showcased, providing attendees with a deeper understanding of the unit’s journey.

Visitors to the exhibition had the unique opportunity to view military equipment firsthand, gaining insights into the technological advancements that are reshaping Ethiopia’s defense landscape.

The anniversary celebrations are far from over. The Ethiopian National Defense Forces have planned a series of events that honor the legacy of heroism associated with the Special Operations Command while reinforcing the importance of preparedness for future missions.
