The Resurgence of Landlines: How Cat Goetze’s ‘Physical Phones’ Captures Nostalgia Amid Digital Overload

In an age dominated by smartphones and social media, a growing number of individuals are yearning for the simplicity of the past. Twenty-nine-year-old Cat Goetze from Los Angeles is capitalizing on this trend with her innovative venture, Physical Phones, a company that has successfully merged nostalgia with modern connectivity. By developing Bluetooth-enabled landline phones, Goetze aims to provide a tangible alternative to the overwhelming presence of mobile technology.

The Resurgence of Landlines: How Cat Goetze’s ‘Physical Phones’ Captures Nostalgia Amid Digital OverloadBridging the Old with the NewA Promising Future

Goetze’s journey into this retro innovation began during the pandemic when she sought ways to reduce her screen time. Memories of childhood hangouts around a landline shared with family inspired her. “I remember the family handbook from school with all the students’ names and their phone numbers,” she reminisced. However, as she explored the logistics surrounding reinstalling a landline into her home, the reality sank in: exorbitant fees and the inconvenience of getting a new phone number.

This realization sparked an idea. Drawing upon her background in science, technology, and society from Stanford University, Goetze queried whether she could somehow retrofit a landline phone to connect with her smartphone. Her initial experiments led to a charming prototype: a pink handset that she shared on TikTok in 2023. Despite the minimal traction from her following, she considered the project a fun distraction rather than a money-making endeavor.

Fast forward to 2025: Goetze had cultivated a substantial online presence through her brand, CatGPT, where she discusses AI and digital wellness. During this time, the conversation surrounding smartphone addiction intensified, echoing her earlier thoughts about landlines. Revisiting her prototype, Goetze posted a video that unexpectedly went viral, garnering over 8 million views and resulting in $120,000 in sales within just three days. “As a creator, your job is to be in touch with the cultural zeitgeist,” Goetze noted, reflecting on how her idea found fertile ground at the right moment.

Bridging the Old with the New

Physical Phones are designed to connect seamlessly with smartphones via Bluetooth, allowing users to receive calls through a traditional handset. This Bluetooth feature enables the landline to function just like a mobile phone, making it convenient and modern while maintaining an essence of nostalgia. The product line includes various styles—handsets, wall mounts, and even retro rotary designs, priced between $90 and $110.

“Pre-orders launched in July 2025 completely funded our initial production round,” Goetze explained. The funds not only covered manufacturing but also logistics—shipping, warehousing, and everything else necessary to bring the concept to fruition. However, like many new businesses, Goetze’s journey was not without its challenges. Sudden tariffs on imports from Asia, implemented during the Trump administration, significantly impacted her profits.

“Working with manufacturers was challenging, as I had never navigated that before,” Goetze commented. It took several months to finalize the design of the first Physical Phone, highlighting the painstaking details involved in hardware production.

To meet her goal of delivering orders in time for Christmas 2025, Goetze made significant sacrifices by opting for air freight instead of cargo shipping, resulting in a $74,000 increase in costs. Though this drastically impacted her margins, she believed such choices reinforced her commitment to customer satisfaction.

A Promising Future

Since its inception, Physical Phones has sold more than 7,500 devices, generating approximately $439,000 in profit in 2025, a sum that Goetze reinvests into research, development, and building a capable team. Currently, she operates without taking a salary, relying instead on income generated from her media enterprise, CatGPT.

In light of her initial success, Goetze plans to further expand her brand in 2026, contemplating retail partnerships to broaden the reach of Physical Phones. Additionally, she is set to launch Cat Labs, a new product studio aimed at creating various innovative products and services.

Looking at both the past and the present, Goetze expresses excitement about the potential direction of her business model. “We’re evaluating whether to maintain the drop model or explore a more traditional retail strategy,” she mused. Her instinct as a creator has led her to tap into a nostalgic desire for simpler communication methods while addressing the growing need for digital wellness—an impressive balancing act in today’s hyper-connected world.

As Goetze forges ahead, the success of Physical Phones serves as a reminder that amid modern distractions, a longing for connectivity in its purest form persists. Whether Goetze’s journey is merely a fleeting trend or a significant shift in consumer behavior is yet to be seen, but one thing remains clear: her innovative approach is capturing the imagination of a significant audience globally.
