Diverse Coalition Convenes to Shape the Future of Artificial Intelligence

In a surprising convergence of diverse political, civic, and academic leaders, approximately 90 attendees united for an unprecedented secret conference in New Orleans, where discussions centered around the ethical and societal implications of artificial intelligence (AI). From church leaders to union representatives and progressive advocates, the event orchestrated by the Future of Life Institute (FLI) sought to build a cohesive framework for AI development that prioritizes humanity. The gathering concluded with the release of the Pro-Human AI Declaration, a document containing five guiding principles aimed at safeguarding human interests in an increasingly AI-driven world.

A Unique Gathering with Varied Perspectives

Held at a Marriott hotel in New Orleans, the conference, which took place in early January, was distinct not just for its secrecy but also for the unexpected alliances it fostered. Attendees included labor union leaders, influential pastors, and political figures from both sides of the ideological spectrum—many attendees found themselves side by side with those whose views often sharply oppose their own.

“The event was remarkable because it brought together a wide array of voices, all of whom, despite differing perspectives, shared a common concern about the trajectory of AI technology,” remarked Max Tegmark, an MIT professor and co-founder of FLI, who played a significant role in organizing the event.

The Pro-Human AI Declaration, released publicly on January 17, emphasizes the need to prioritize societal well-being over the concentrated power of technology giants. Among its core tenets are the calls for preserving human agency and liberty as well as ensuring the welfare of children and communities.

Broad Support from Civic Organizations

What makes the declaration particularly notable is its far-reaching coalition of signatories, which includes organizations and leaders from various sectors. Noteworthy institutions, including the AFL-CIO, the American Federation of Teachers, and religious groups like the G20 Interfaith Forum, have all shown their support. Politically, it also boasts endorsement from unconventional figures such as Glenn Beck, Ralph Nader, and veteran activist Susan Rice, further illustrating its bipartisan appeal.

“My involvement has been premised on the recognition that the ethical implications of AI are too significant to ignore,” said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, who contributed to drafting the declaration. “We found that our organization’s and FLI’s visions align closely, particularly when it comes to the use of AI in education.”

Tensions, Agreements, and Next Steps

While participants represented a range of viewpoints—including conservative and progressive factions—initial uncertainties about sharing the stage faded as common concerns emerged. Topics such as the ethical deployment of AI in military applications and safeguarding the emotional well-being of children quickly garnered unanimous agreement.

Joe Allen, co-founder of the advocacy group Humans First, emphasized the unity over contentious issues: “In a polarized environment, our collective stance on restricting the existence of autonomous weapons powered solely by AI is crucial. It’s a fundamental human rights perspective.”

Structured under Chatham House Rules, the discussions allowed for open dialogue while preserving confidentiality about specific remarks and interactions. However, many felt that the time constraint and the gravity of the issues being discussed accelerated the consensus-building process.

Anthony Aguirre, another co-founder of FLI, pointed out that the meeting was not intended as a repetition of the earlier optimistic principles agreed upon during the 2017 Asilomar Conference. Instead, it was a necessary recalibration that recognizes the daunting realities surrounding AI development today. “The landscape has shifted; the desire for rapid technological advancement is often prioritized over fundamental ethical considerations, which raises pressing questions for society,” Aguirre stated.

Striving for a Pro-Human Movement

Despite the challenges, the participants unanimously echoed a commitment to centering humanity in AI decisions. “We will not have the luxury of debating other issues if we don’t get this right,” was a recurring sentiment throughout the discussions, underscoring an urgent call to action.

In light of these proceedings, the emergent coalition aims to develop a shared narrative to influence policy and governance frameworks surrounding AI technology. “If there’s a singular takeaway, it’s that our collective advocacy needs to resonate with the public and inspire a movement to ensure that human values guide technology, not the other way around,” Allen concluded.

As the AI industry continues to evolve rapidly, the Pro-Human AI Declaration serves as a reference point for what many believe should be at the forefront of future technological advancements: humanity itself. The signatories plan to leverage their collective influence to push for changes in policy and corporate practices that place ethical considerations above profit motives, facing the promising but perilous road ahead together.

As society grapples with accelerated technological change, these dialogues and declarations are crucial in ensuring that human welfare remains a priority in the development of artificial intelligence.
