Cincinnati Reds Obliterate Orioles 24-2 in Historic Offensive Explosion

The Cincinnati Reds delivered an unforgettable performance Sunday, crushing the Baltimore Orioles 24-2 in a record-setting offensive display. Rookie Noelvi Marte and Austin Wynns led the charge, combining for 13 RBIs in a game that saw the Reds post their highest run total in 26 years.

Marte, batting eighth, had a career day with five hits—including his first grand slam—and seven RBIs. His eighth-inning blast came off Orioles infielder Jorge Mateo, pressed into pitching duty amid the blowout. Wynns, the Reds’ ninth hitter, added a three-run homer in the ninth off catcher Gary Sánchez, finishing with six RBIs—a personal best.

The Reds’ 25-hit barrage marked their highest-scoring game since a 24-12 win over Colorado in 1999. For Baltimore, it was the most runs allowed since a humiliating 30-3 loss to Texas in 2007.

Historic Performances

Marte and Wynns made history as the most productive bottom-of-the-order duo in modern baseball. Their 11 combined hits are the most by the No. 8 and No. 9 hitters since at least 1901, while their 13 RBIs tied for the second-most since RBIs became an official stat in 1920.

Elly De La Cruz ignited the onslaught with a third-inning homer off Orioles starter Charlie Morton (0-5), who lasted just 2.1 innings—his shortest outing since September 2023. The Reds piled on seven runs in the frame, effectively ending the game early.

Bullpen Steps Up

With Cincinnati leading big, manager David Bell turned to a bullpen game. Taylor Rogers (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless fifth inning, while Randy Wynne secured his first career save with three solid innings of relief.

Baltimore’s lone bright spot came from Adley Rutschman, who homered late to avoid a shutout. Austin Hays also impressed, going 8-for-14 with five RBIs in the series against his former team.

Defensive Highlight

De La Cruz showcased his elite range at shortstop, robbing Jackson Holliday of an RBI single with a leaping grab in the second inning—a play that might have shifted momentum had the game been closer.

What’s Next?

The Reds (19-15) continue their road trip Monday in Miami, sending lefty Nick Lodolo (2-1, 2.31 ERA) against Marlins rookie Max Meyer (1-2, 2.63).

Meanwhile, the Orioles (20-12) look to regroup Tuesday in Washington, with Dean Kremer (2-2, 6.41 ERA) facing Nationals left-hander Mitchell Parker (2-1, 1.85).
