Cleveland Clinic Children’s Derby Soirée Raises $6.5 Million for Pediatric Care and Research
CLEVELAND — In a dazzling display of community generosity, the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Derby Soirée brought together more than 500 guests on May 2, raising an impressive $6.5 million to support pediatric care and groundbreaking research.
Held at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, the event doubled as a celebration of the 152nd Kentucky Derby. Attendees enjoyed the iconic race while rallying behind a cause close to their hearts—improving the lives of children facing serious medical challenges.
The soirée, presented by the Fedeli Family Foundation, Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland superstars, and Scala Family Foundation, featured heartfelt speeches from two inspiring young patients. A pediatric cancer survivor and a heart transplant recipient shared their journeys, offering a powerful reminder of the impact of donations on real lives.
“We’re deeply grateful to everyone who supported this event and Cleveland Clinic Children’s,” said Dr. Rita Pappas, interim chief of Cleveland Clinic Children’s. “This generosity allows us to provide world-class care to children, whether they’re battling everyday illnesses or the most complex medical conditions.”
Since its inception in 1990, the Derby Soirée has become the flagship fundraising event for Cleveland Clinic Children’s, raising more than $30 million over the years. This year’s funds will advance pediatric research, innovative programs, and specialized care across all areas of the clinic.
Dr. Tom Mihaljevic, CEO and president of Cleveland Clinic and holder of the Morton L. Mandel CEO Chair, addressed the crowd, emphasizing the critical role of philanthropy in transforming pediatric healthcare. The evening also included special tributes to key donors, including the Davis Family & ECHO Health, who contributed $3 million to the school-based health program, and Richard Morrison, who donated $1 million toward pediatric sports cardiology.
Additionally, Bill and Sally Scala ignited the paddle raise with a generous $500,000 contribution, setting the tone for an evening of extraordinary giving.
The event’s success underscores the Cleveland community’s commitment to ensuring children receive the best possible care, regardless of their medical needs. Plans are already underway for the next Derby Soirée, scheduled for May 1, 2027.
