Despite riverfront construction, the beloved festival draws crowds with music, crafts, and Appalachian traditions
NEW RICHMOND, Ohio — As summer approaches, the Appalachian Festival is kicking off the season in southwest Ohio, bringing together music, dance, and cultural traditions this Mother’s Day weekend.
Now in its second year in New Richmond after more than five decades at Coney Island, the festival celebrates the rich heritage of Appalachia. Though ongoing riverfront construction has condensed the event space, organizers promise an unforgettable experience for thousands of visitors.
A Festival of Tradition and Unity
The Appalachian Festival is more than just an event—it’s a vibrant showcase of history and community.
“It’s a little bit of everything,” said Ron Simmons, a festival board member. “About 30% of people in this region trace their roots back to Appalachia, so this festival is deeply personal for many.”
Attendees can expect live music, traditional dancing, handmade crafts, and a wide variety of food vendors. Many participants dress in period clothing, adding to the immersive experience.
Kathryn Bailey, vice president of the festival board, played a key role in relocating the event to New Richmond. “I knew this was the perfect place,” she said. “New Richmond’s riverfront is unique, and it’s the ideal setting to honor Appalachian culture.”
Construction Challenges, Same Spirit
A $13 million riverfront renovation grant has temporarily altered the festival’s layout, closing portions of Front Street. While the setup is more compact this year, the energy remains unchanged.
“The riverfront needed revitalization, and this grant is making that happen,” Bailey explained. “It’s split up the town a bit, but we’re adapting.”
Despite the adjustments, the festival’s charm endures. Musicians play traditional instruments, artisans display their crafts, and families gather to celebrate the unofficial start of summer.
A Weekend of Celebration
The festival runs Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to Sunday, May 12, at 6 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available both online and at the gate.
For Simmons, the festival is a perfect way to spend Mother’s Day weekend. “This is so much better than staying home,” he said with a laugh.
As New Richmond prepares to welcome visitors, the Appalachian Festival stands as a testament to resilience, tradition, and the enduring spirit of community.
