Travis Bazzana Hits First MLB Home Run, Leads Cleveland Guardians to Victory Over Twins

CLEVELAND — Travis Bazzana, the Cleveland Guardians’ prized rookie, has quickly turned the page on a rocky start to his major league career. After an uncharacteristic 0-for-12 slump in his first dozen at-bats, the Australian-born phenom has emerged as a key contributor for the Guardians, showcasing his power, speed, and poise in Friday night’s thrilling 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins.

The 2024 No. 1 overall draft pick made history by becoming the first Australian-born player to be selected at the top of the draft. Now, he’s carving out his place in the record books. Bazzana launched his first major league home run—a monstrous 427-foot shot into the Guardians’ bullpen in center field—off Twins’ pitcher Connor Prielipp in the first inning. The two-run homer gave Cleveland an early 4-0 lead and marked the second-longest blast by a Guardians player this season.

“I was just hoping,” Bazzana said with a grin after the game. “There was no wind today, so it carried out. I got it good. I just hustled and tried to yell it out.”

But Bazzana wasn’t done there. In the eighth inning, he beat out a potential inning-ending double-play ball, then proceeded to steal both second and third base. He later scored on a single by catcher Austin Hedges, extending Cleveland’s lead to 6-3.

“He’s been pushing the pace since he’s gotten here,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “He looks comfortable. Looks like he belongs, and he crushed that ball tonight.”

Since his shaky start, Bazzana has rebounded impressively, going 6-for-18 with four RBIs and six stolen bases. His six steals since May 2 lead all major leaguers and are the most by a Cleveland player in their first nine games since Alex Cole swiped 10 in 1990.

Bazzana’s performance has not only energized the Guardians but also cemented his place among Australia’s growing ranks of MLB talent. He became the 10th Australian-born player to homer in the majors, joining the likes of Dave Nilsson, who holds the record for most home runs by an Australian with 105 during his career with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 21-year-old infielder’s confidence has never wavered, even amid his early struggles. “I finally got a ball kind of in the air where I wanted it today,” Bazzana said. “But I’m in a good place offensively. Sometimes balls go at guys, and you’ve just got to stick with it, stay healthy, and keep finding my ball flight. I’ll be good.”

Teammates have taken notice of Bazzana’s infectious energy and competitive spirit. Left-hander Parker Messick, who tossed 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball in Friday’s win, described the rookie as “an animal” for his fearless approach and visible passion on the field.

“I love that he would describe me that way,” Bazzana chuckled. “When I’m in a controlled aggression, that’s when I’m at my best. I showed a little bit of that tonight.”

Bazzana’s journey to the majors has been steeped in anticipation since his historic draft selection. Now, he’s proving he belongs—and doing so in style. As the Guardians continue their push in the competitive AL Central, Bazzana’s emergence as a dynamic threat on both sides of the ball could be a game-changer for the young squad.

For the confident rookie, this is just the beginning. “Honestly, it’s kind of felt the same from the get-go,” Bazzana said. “I felt really good. I was squaring the ball up and taking my walks. If I’m swinging at good pitches and squaring the ball up, over time, good things are going to happen.”

With his first home run now in the books and a growing list of accolades, Bazzana is poised to write the next chapter of his promising career—one that Cleveland fans hope will be filled with plenty more memorable moments.
