Cincinnati Reds Dominate Houston Astros 5-0 Behind Strong Pitching and Hot Hitting
CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds bounced back in style Sunday, shutting out the Houston Astros 5-0 to secure a series win and snap a recent rough patch. Led by a stellar pitching performance from Andrew Abbott and a breakout game by Elly De La Cruz, the Reds showcased their resilience after an eight-game losing streak.
Abbott delivered a masterful outing, allowing just three hits over six innings while striking out five and walking one. The 24-year-old left-hander kept Houston’s batters off balance, throwing 55 of his 85 pitches for strikes. The bullpen followed suit, with Tejay Antone, Sam Moll, and Graham Ashcraft each pitching flawless innings to complete the combined three-hitter.
“Abbott was fantastic today,” said Reds manager David Bell. “He set the tone early, and our bullpen came in and did their job. It’s a great way to finish the series.”
Offensively, the Reds found their rhythm in the fourth inning after a slow start against Astros starter Kai-Wei Teng. Elly De La Cruz ignited the rally with a single, followed by a double from Sal Stewart. JJ Bleday then delivered a clutch two-run triple to right field, breaking the scoreless tie. Tyler Stephenson added an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0, ending Teng’s day after just three-plus innings.
De La Cruz continued to shine, scoring again in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Matt McLain. Spencer Steer sealed the deal in the sixth with a solo home run, his fourth of the season, giving Cincinnati a comfortable 5-0 lead.
For De La Cruz, it was another standout performance in what has been a red-hot stretch. The 21-year-old shortstop recorded three hits and scored twice, marking his third consecutive multi-hit game. His consistency at the plate has been a bright spot for the Reds during a challenging season.
“Elly is playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Bell said. “He’s a huge part of what we’re trying to build here.”
The Astros, meanwhile, struggled to generate any offense after a dominant 10-0 win in the series opener. Houston managed just three hits all game and failed to capitalize on any scoring opportunities.
“We couldn’t get anything going today,” said Astros manager Dusty Baker. “Give credit to their pitchers—they executed well.”
With Sunday’s win, the Reds took two of three games in the weekend series, marking a turning point after their recent skid. The team now looks to carry this momentum into their upcoming games as they aim to climb back into contention in the NL Central.
“Winning this series was big for us,” Abbott said. “We’ve been through a tough stretch, but we’re starting to find our groove again.”
Cincinnati’s next challenge comes on the road as they face the Milwaukee Brewers in a crucial divisional matchup. For now, the Reds can savor a much-needed victory and hope that this win sparks a resurgence.
