CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland is gearing up for a jam-packed weekend filled with major events, including the USS Cleveland Commissioning Ceremony, the annual Cleveland Marathon, and back-to-back Guardians baseball games. Residents and visitors alike should prepare for significant road closures, parking restrictions, and bustling crowds across the city.

The USS Cleveland Commissioning Ceremony, set for Saturday morning, marks a proud moment for the city as a U.S. Navy warship will be formally welcomed into service. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Marathon, stretching across Saturday and Sunday, will draw thousands of runners and spectators to downtown streets. Adding to the excitement, the Guardians will host games at Progressive Field on both days, drawing sports fans to the city’s core.

With such a packed schedule, city officials are urging drivers to plan ahead and stay informed about closures and parking limitations. Major roads, including St. Clair Avenue, Lakeside Avenue, and Superior Avenue, will be affected at various times throughout the weekend. Rolling closures are expected during the marathon, with timings adjusted based on runner progress and traffic flow.

“Public safety is our top priority,” said a spokesperson for the Cleveland Division of Police Bureau of Traffic. “We encourage everyone to check for real-time updates and plan their routes accordingly.”

Key Road Closures

Saturday, May 16
From 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., several downtown roads will be closed, including St. Clair Avenue from East 12th Street to West 9th Street, Lakeside Avenue from West 6th Street to West 3rd Street, and Euclid Avenue from East 9th Street to East 22nd Street. Superior Avenue will also be impacted, with closures between West 6th Street and East 23rd Street.

Sunday, May 17
Starting at 6 a.m., additional closures will take effect, including St. Clair Avenue from East 6th Street to West 9th Street, West 9th Street from St. Clair Avenue to Superior Avenue, and Lakeside Avenue from East 18th Street to West 3rd Street. The Shoreway will also be closed between East 55th Street and West Boulevard from 2 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Parking Restrictions

Parking limitations will be in effect from 4 p.m. to midnight on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Key areas affected include East 9th Street from Euclid Avenue to Bolivar Road, Prospect Avenue from Ontario Street to East 9th Street, and Huron Road from East 9th Street to Ontario Street. Vehicles violating these restrictions will be ticketed or towed, with impounded vehicles retrievable at the city’s impound unit on Quigley Road.

Guardians Game Zones

Special event parking zones will be activated downtown during Guardians games, starting two hours before first pitch and lasting until 10 p.m. or the end of the game, whichever comes first. These zones are designed to provide affordable parking options compared to private lots and garages.

Tips for Visitors

City officials are encouraging visitors to use available resources, such as maps and updates on the city’s website, to navigate parking and closures. “Planning ahead will make for a smoother and more enjoyable experience,” the city’s release noted.

As Cleveland welcomes thousands of attendees for these high-profile events, proactive planning will be key to ensuring a safe and seamless weekend for all.
