Paul McCartney’s Post-Beatles Era Takes Center Stage in New Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Exhibit

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A groundbreaking exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is offering fans an intimate look into Paul McCartney’s life and career after The Beatles. Titled “Paul McCartney and Wings,” the exhibit, which opened Friday, showcases the largest collection of McCartney’s personal artifacts ever displayed publicly. Through handwritten notes, iconic instruments, and photographs taken by his late wife, Linda McCartney, the exhibit explores how McCartney reinvented himself as a solo artist, husband, and father in the 1970s.

The exhibit delves into McCartney’s journey after The Beatles disbanded in 1970, focusing on his decade-long project with Wings. The band, active from 1971 to 1981, produced chart-topping hits like “Band on the Run,” “Silly Love Songs,” and “Live and Let Die,” cementing McCartney’s legacy as a formidable solo artist. But the exhibit goes beyond the music, highlighting how McCartney’s personal life deeply influenced his creative output during this period.

Andy Leach, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s senior director of museum and archival collections, said the exhibit underscores how Wings was a reflection of McCartney’s evolving identity. “What’s fascinating about Wings is that it was built around reinvention, renewal, and experimentation—but family was at the heart of it,” Leach explained. “This was a band that didn’t shy away from embracing domestic life, which was unusual for rock music in that era.”

A Family-Centric Band

At a time when rock music was overwhelmingly male-dominated, Wings stood out for integrating family life into its public persona. McCartney and Linda, who was the band’s keyboardist and harmony vocalist, toured with their children and often drew inspiration from their shared experiences. The exhibit recreates the Scottish farmhouse where the couple retreated after The Beatles’ breakup, offering visitors a glimpse into their private world. Photos of the family adorn the walls, and Linda’s camera sits on the kitchen table, symbolizing her dual role as both a band member and documentarian of their lives.

Linda McCartney, an acclaimed photographer and the first woman to have her work featured on the cover of Rolling Stone, played a pivotal role in shaping Wings’ identity. Her photographs, many of which are on display, capture the intimacy and authenticity of McCartney’s post-Beatles life. “Linda was at the center of the family, and in many ways, at the center of the band,” Leach noted. Married for three decades, Linda’s influence extended beyond her musical contributions until her untimely death from breast cancer in 1998.

Iconic Artifacts and Behind-the-Scenes Stories

The exhibit features an array of artifacts from McCartney’s personal collection, including guitars he used during performances and handwritten scores by legendary Beatles producer George Martin. One standout piece is Martin’s original arrangement for “Live and Let Die,” which became one of Wings’ most enduring hits. Other items include contributions from former band members and longtime roadie John Hamill, as well as the widow of Denny Laine, Wings’ co-founder and former member of The Moody Blues.

Leach, who traveled to London to collaborate with McCartney’s team in preparing the exhibit, described handling the instruments as a surreal experience. “To hold guitars that I’ve heard on record my whole life—it’s incredible,” he said.

Wings’ Influence on Rock Music

Beyond its focus on McCartney’s personal life, the exhibit highlights Wings’ impact on the evolution of rock music. Known for their elaborate stage designs and pioneering use of lighting, the band helped define the spectacle of 1970s arena rock. Tours like Wings Over the World and Wings Over America set new standards for live performances, blending musical innovation with theatrical flair.

The exhibit also coincides with renewed interest in Wings’ legacy. A recent Amazon Prime documentary, Man on the Run, and an upcoming box set and book titled Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run, co-written by McCartney and historian Ted Widmer, have brought the band’s contributions back into the spotlight. “There’s a renewed appreciation for Wings among fans,” Leach said. “This exhibit feels like perfect timing.”

A Year-Long Journey Through McCartney’s Legacy

The “Paul McCartney and Wings” exhibit is slated to remain open for at least a year, with hopes of extending its run through the summer of 2027. For fans of McCartney and rock history, it’s a rare opportunity to step into the world of one of music’s most iconic figures.

Whether you’re drawn to the music, the personal stories, or the historical significance of Wings, this exhibit offers something for everyone. As Leach put it, “It’s a chance to understand just how remarkable and important Wings was—not just to Paul McCartney, but to the world of rock music.”
