June 2, 2026

Ohio’s thriving wine industry is taking center stage this month as the state kicks off its annual Ohio Wine Month celebration. The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and the Ohio Grape Industries Committee honored the best of the Buckeye State’s wineries at a special event, recognizing award-winning vintners and highlighting the economic impact of the industry.

A Toast to Excellence

State officials, winery owners, grape growers, and industry leaders gathered to celebrate the 2025 Ohio Wine Competition winners, including those who earned the prestigious Double Gold Medal. ODA Director Brian Baldridge praised the state’s winemakers for their innovation and craftsmanship.

“Ohio’s wineries offer an incredible variety of wines and experiences that reflect the heart of our communities,” Baldridge said. “This month is about celebrating their hard work and encouraging Ohioans to explore the unique flavors our state has to offer.”

With over 430 licensed wineries, Ohio ranks as the seventh-largest wine-producing state in the U.S. The industry contributes $6.6 billion annually to the economy and supports more than 40,000 jobs, making it a vital part of Ohio’s agricultural and tourism sectors.

2026 Director’s Choice Award Winners Announced

The event also unveiled the 2026 Director’s Choice Awards, selected through a blind tasting earlier this year. The winning wines will be showcased at the 2026 Ohio State Fair, running from July 29 to August 9. This year’s top honors went to:

  • Best Dessert Wine: 2021 Scarlet Raven – Raven’s Glenn Winery (West Lafayette, Coshocton County)
  • Best Red Wine: 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon – Laurentia Vineyard & Winery (Madison, Lake County)
  • Best Red Wine: 2024 Cabernet-Merlot Reserve – M Cellars (Geneva, Ashtabula County)
  • Best White Wine: 2023 Riesling – Baci Winery (Madison, Lake County)
  • Best Sparkling/Rosé Wine: Kosicek Saperavi – Kosicek Vineyards (Geneva, Ashtabula County)

A Growing Industry with Deep Roots

Ohio’s wine history dates back to the 19th century, but recent decades have seen a resurgence in quality and innovation. The state’s diverse climate and soil conditions allow for a wide range of grape varieties, from crisp Rieslings to bold Cabernets.

Many winning vineyards, like Laurentia Winery and M Cellars, have gained national recognition, drawing wine enthusiasts from across the country.
