University of Akron Names Dustin Ford as New Men’s Basketball Head Coach
AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron has announced Dustin Ford as the new head coach of its men’s basketball team, pending approval from the board of trustees. Ford, who has served as the team’s associate head coach for the past nine seasons, steps into the role with a proven track record of success and a deep connection to the program.
During his tenure as associate head coach, Ford played a pivotal role in guiding the Zips to three consecutive Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament championships and four NCAA postseason appearances in the last five years. His leadership and expertise have been instrumental in maintaining the program’s competitive edge, making him a natural choice for the top spot.
“Dustin Ford is the right leader to guide Akron men’s basketball into its next chapter,” said University of Akron President R.J. Nemer. “He has been a key part of our sustained success and brings the integrity, leadership, and competitive mindset that define this program.”
Ford’s basketball journey extends far beyond Akron. A standout player at Ohio University, he started in all four seasons during his collegiate career. After graduating, he honed his coaching skills as the head varsity coach at Jackson High School in Jackson, Ohio, before transitioning to the college level.
In 2006, Ford joined Western Carolina as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, quickly earning a promotion to associate head coach two years later. From 2008 to 2012, he contributed to the success of the Ohio Bobcats, helping the team secure two MAC championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. He later spent five seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois, further solidifying his reputation as a skilled and dedicated coach.
Ford’s return to Akron in 2015 marked a turning point for the program. Under his guidance, the Zips have consistently been a force in the MAC, earning national recognition for their achievements. His familiarity with the team and university makes him uniquely qualified to take the reins and build on the program’s legacy.
“I’m extremely excited for this opportunity to lead the Akron men’s basketball program,” Ford said. “This is a program with a rich tradition, and I’m honored to be the one to help continue to move it forward. We’ve built something special here in Akron, and I look forward to working with our players, staff, and the community to build on our success.”
The University of Akron is planning an official event to formally introduce Ford as the new head coach. Fans and supporters are eager to see how Ford will shape the future of Zips basketball, especially as the program aims to maintain its dominance in the MAC and make deeper runs in NCAA postseason play.
With Ford at the helm, the Zips are poised to continue their winning ways while fostering a culture of excellence both on and off the court.
