University of Dayton Launches Groundbreaking AI Curriculum to Prepare Students for the Future

DAYTON, Ohio — The University of Dayton is taking a bold step into the future of education by introducing a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) curriculum this fall. The program aims to equip students with the skills and ethical grounding needed to navigate an increasingly AI-driven world.

The initiative is part of the university’s broader strategy to integrate AI education across its undergraduate programs. Starting in their first year, students will delve into two foundational courses: AI Fundamentals and Human Dignity in the Era of AI. These classes will provide a dual perspective, teaching students both the technical aspects of AI and its broader societal implications.

“Our students will graduate ready to lead in an AI-enabled world,” said Meghan Henning, professor and senior assistant provost for undergraduate curriculum and student success. “They’ll have the skills and agility to stay ahead as technology evolves. But just as importantly, we’re preparing them to keep humans at the center of their work, understanding the limits of technology and using it for the common good.”

The first course, AI Fundamentals, will focus on understanding how AI technologies function, giving students a solid technical foundation. The second, Human Dignity in the Era of AI, will explore the ethical challenges posed by AI, its impact on society, and how to use it responsibly.

In their second year, students will participate in a redesigned writing seminar that examines how AI is transforming communication, research, and knowledge creation. This course will encourage critical thinking about the role of AI in shaping human creativity and intellectual inquiry.

“AI helps students ask questions in a more meaningful way,” said Sidaard Gunasekaran, the Hans von Ohain Chair in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. “By the time they enter the workforce, they’ll stand out because they’ve learned to use AI to enhance their skills, not just automate their tasks.”

The University of Dayton’s AI curriculum reflects its Marianist values, emphasizing ethical responsibility and the importance of serving others. The program is designed to ensure students are not only technically proficient but also thoughtful leaders who can navigate the complexities of an AI-driven society.

This initiative positions the University of Dayton as a leader in AI education, preparing its graduates to excel in fields where AI is increasingly prevalent. From healthcare to engineering, business to the arts, students will leave campus with a competitive edge in their chosen careers.
