Dave Chappelle Celebrates Restoration of Historic Schoolhouse and Secures Future of Local Radio Station

DAYTON, Ohio — Comedian Dave Chappelle stood proudly on the lawn of the newly restored Union Schoolhouse in Yellow Springs on Thursday, joining community leaders and neighbors to celebrate a dual victory: the revival of the historic building and the relocation of local public radio station WYSO.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked a significant milestone for the small village, blending preservation and progress. The Union Schoolhouse, originally built in 1872, has served as an early integrated school, municipal offices, and small businesses over its long history. After years of vacancy, Chappelle’s real estate company, Iron Table Holdings, purchased the property in 2020 and transformed it into a modern, multiuse space.

WYSO, a 68-year-old public radio station, now occupies the lower floors of the building, ensuring its roots remain firmly planted in Yellow Springs. Chappelle’s offices will be housed on the top floor.

“It’s like our lifeblood in the community,” Chappelle told reporters, emphasizing the importance of keeping WYSO local. The station had faced the possibility of relocating to nearby Dayton, a move Chappelle described as “a crushing blow” for Yellow Springs.

More than 200 people gathered for the celebration, including Chappelle’s wife and mother, station leaders, and local officials such as Yellow Springs Mayor Steve McQueen and Dayton Mayor Shenise Turner-Sloss.

A Commitment to Community

For Chappelle, the investment was deeply personal. “If you have the opportunity like I did, to invest in your community, then it’s one of the greatest investments I’ve ever made,” he said. “In some ways it feels dutiful. Other times I feel proud. … but ultimately, I’m doing it because I want to, not because I have to.”

The project is more than just a renovation; it’s a testament to Chappelle’s commitment to preserving the town’s history and supporting its future. Yellow Springs, a village of just over 3,500 residents, has long been central to Chappelle’s life. Though he grew up in Maryland, he spent summers in the village, where his late father worked as the dean of students at Antioch College.

Today, Chappelle lives on a 39-acre farm with his wife and three children, deeply embedded in the community. He has invested in local properties, opened a comedy club downtown, and hosted notable events, including pandemic-era performances in a nearby cornfield that drew national attention.

A Lifeline for Local Media

The restoration of the Union Schoolhouse comes at a critical time for local media outlets across the country, which face shrinking resources, fragmented audiences, and competition from digital platforms. WYSO, however, is thriving.

“Dave has never made a suggestion about our programming,” said Luke Dennis, WYSO’s general manager. “We belong to the community.”

The new facility offers performance space, gathering areas, and expanded capacity for programming, transforming how the station connects with its audience. Dennis described the investment as positioning WYSO in “a place of strength” amid industry challenges.

“They tell the truth, they tell the stories, and it’s rare these days,” said Mark Willis, a Yellow Springs resident. “To see them growing instead of shrinking is beautiful.”

A Symbol of Hope and Resilience

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was more than just an event; it was a celebration of community resilience and the power of local investment. As attendees toured the restored building, the moment underscored the importance of preserving institutions that connect people to their history and each other.

“I’m more determined and inspired that these institutions flourish and stay of the people,” Chappelle said after the ceremony. “The only way they can do that is the people supporting them. I’m hopeful more than worried.”

With the Union Schoolhouse restored and WYSO’s future secured, Yellow Springs stands as a shining example of what can happen when a community comes together to support its own.
