North Ridgeville Students Excel in International Math Competition, Advance to New York Finals

North Ridgeville, Ohio — Three high school students from Lake Ridge Academy have proven their mathematical prowess by securing a spot in the finals of a prestigious international math competition. Outshining over 770 teams from the United States and the United Kingdom, the trio will now head to New York City for the ultimate showdown on April 27.

The competition, known as the M-3 Challenge, tasks participants with solving complex, real-world problems using advanced mathematical techniques. This year’s challenge required teams to analyze the financial impact of online gambling on individuals—a topic that resonated with the Lake Ridge Academy students.

“They love math. In their free time, whenever they can, they dive into it. The more math, the better,” said Jake Lord, their math teacher and mentor.

Junior Kisen Yao discovered the competition and quickly rallied her teammates: junior Shirley You and senior Eric Shin. Over a grueling 14-hour session, the trio worked tirelessly in You’s basement, crafting a detailed 57-page paper. With just 10 seconds to spare, they submitted their solution, earning them a spot in the top six out of 770 entries.

“It was fascinating because the problem was connected to real-life issues,” You explained. “That made it even more interesting to work on.”

The students’ dedication and analytical skills have not only impressed their teacher but also positioned them as top contenders for the competition’s $20,000 scholarship prize.

“I knew these kids were special,” Lord said. “I just didn’t realize they were this special.”

In New York, the team will present their findings before a panel of professional mathematicians. For Lord, this moment marks a significant milestone in his teaching career. While he instructed the students in calculus and statistics, he acknowledges that they’ve now surpassed his expertise.

“At this point, they’re doing the highest-level math,” he admitted.

Despite their success, the students remain grounded and enthusiastic about the upcoming challenge. “Oh, that sounds fun. I want to try it,” Yao recalled saying when she first learned about the competition.

As they prepare for the finals, the Lake Ridge Academy team hopes to inspire other young mathematicians while aiming for victory. Their journey underscores the power of teamwork, curiosity, and a passion for problem-solving.
