PDP Headquarters Undergoes Renovation as Wike-Backed Faction Takes Control

The national secretariat of Nigeria’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is undergoing a major renovation after police unsealed the building, granting access to the faction backed by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.

Workers were seen repainting walls, replacing air conditioners, and changing locks at Wadata Plaza in Abuja on Monday, though party staff had not yet resumed duties. The move follows a court order allowing the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee (NWC) to take control of the facility.

A Divided Party

The PDP has been embroiled in an internal power struggle, with two factions vying for control. The Mohammed-led group, supported by Wike, announced the reopening of the secretariat and the party’s presidential campaign office, Legacy House, on Saturday.

“The facilities were unsealed in compliance with duly issued court orders,” Mohammed said in a statement. He praised the police for their professionalism but warned against any attempts to disrupt operations at the headquarters.

However, the rival faction, led by Tanimu Turaki, condemned the move, calling it “contemptuous.” Spokesman Ini Ememobong argued that the court judgment cited by police had already been appealed.

“By this action, they have tampered with the case, which could undermine the Court of Appeal’s decision,” Ememobong said.

Security Presence Remains

Though barricades around the building were removed, police vehicles and personnel were still stationed at the premises. A party insider, speaking anonymously, revealed that renovations began on Sunday.

“Staff loyal to the Turaki-led NWC may hesitate to return,” the source added.

The dispute highlights deepening divisions within the PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party, as it struggles to present a united front ahead of future elections. Observers warn that prolonged infighting could weaken the party’s chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

What’s Next?

With renovations underway, the Mohammed faction appears to be consolidating control. However, legal challenges from the Turaki group could prolong the conflict.

As the PDP navigates this crisis, the coming weeks will determine whether the party can reconcile its factions or risk further fragmentation.
