Ohio Woman’s Persistent Headaches Reveal Brain Tumor – Urges Others Not to Ignore Warning Signs

CINCINNATI — What began as a throbbing headache turned into a life-altering diagnosis for an Ohio woman, who is now sharing her story to encourage others to take unexplained symptoms seriously.

Lisa Herron, a Cincinnati resident, initially brushed off her dizziness and headaches as minor ailments—until a near-fainting episode sent her to the doctor. An MRI scan revealed a non-cancerous brain tumor, a discovery that shocked her but ultimately led to life-saving treatment.

A Wake-Up Call

Herron described her headaches as explosive, comparing them to “chewing on a firecracker” as pain radiated through her skull. By 2023, the discomfort became unbearable, prompting her to seek medical help.

“I almost passed out in the shower one morning,” Herron recalled. “That’s when I knew something wasn’t right.”

Her family physician ordered an MRI, which uncovered the tumor. Though benign, the mass caused worsening side effects—debilitating headaches, dizziness, and medication that eventually stopped working. By February 2026, Herron underwent surgery to remove the growth.

“After everything, the surgery was the best decision,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”

The Silent Threat of Brain Tumors

Brain tumors often go undetected until symptoms become severe. Warning signs can include persistent headaches, personality changes, seizures, or loss of sensory functions like hearing or smell.

Dr. Norberto Andaluz, co-director of the Brain Tumor Center, emphasizes that many patients don’t realize they have a tumor until it’s advanced.

“People may dismiss headaches or minor weakness, but these could be critical red flags,” Andaluz said. “Early detection is key to better outcomes.”

According to the National Cancer Institute, over 24,000 new brain cancer cases were reported in the U.S. in 2025, with more than 18,000 deaths linked to the disease. While Herron’s tumor was non-cancerous, her experience underscores the importance of timely medical intervention.

A Message of Hope and Vigilance

Now tumor-free, Herron credits her recovery to swift action and strong family support. She urges anyone experiencing unexplained pain or neurological symptoms to consult a doctor immediately.

“Don’t wait—see a specialist,” she advised. “It could save your life.”

Herron’s story serves as a powerful reminder: what seems like a minor health issue could be a silent, growing threat.
