HAMILTON, Ohio — For the first time, the city’s deep-rooted papermaking history is being brought to life through a vibrant, interactive art festival. The Hamilton Unfolded Paper Festival, running from April 16 to April 18, transforms downtown into a gallery of intricate paper sculptures, installations, and hands-on activities—all free to the public.

Eighteen artists have crafted unique pieces displayed in local businesses and public spaces, blending creativity with Hamilton’s industrial heritage. From delicate paper flowers to bold cardboard sculptures, the festival highlights the versatility of an everyday material often taken for granted.

A Nod to Hamilton’s Papermaking Past

Hamilton’s identity has long been tied to paper production, thanks to the historic Champion Paper Mill. The festival pays homage to that legacy while reinventing paper as an artistic medium.

“Hamilton grew because of papermaking,” said Taylor Stone-Welch, Vice President of City of Sculpture, the nonprofit organizing the event. “This festival is a way to honor that history while engaging the community in something fresh and unexpected.”

Art Meets Commerce

Local businesses serve as unconventional galleries, with each shop featuring custom paper art tailored to its aesthetic. At one boutique, artist Jennifer Eickelberger paired a handmade paper skirt with clothing from the store, creating a striking visual contrast.

“I used recycled church bulletins and old coin envelopes,” Eickelberger explained. “People think paper is fragile, but these pieces are surprisingly durable.”

Nearby, Lori Kay Farr, a glass and mosaic artist, stepped outside her usual medium to craft 16 oversized Italian crepe paper flowers. “It pushed my creativity in a new direction,” she said.

Family-Friendly and Accessible

The festival is designed to be inclusive, with kid-friendly workshops and interactive displays. Visitors can watch live demonstrations, try their hand at paper crafting, or simply wander downtown to admire the installations.

“We wanted something that would appeal to all ages,” Stone-Welch noted. “Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just looking for a fun weekend activity, there’s something here for everyone.”

A Bright Future for Paper Art

Organizers hope the festival will become an annual tradition, further cementing Hamilton’s reputation as a hub for creativity. For now, residents and visitors alike are encouraged to explore the temporary exhibits before they’re gone.

“It’s amazing what you can do with paper,” Eickelberger said. “This festival proves it’s more than just something you write on—it’s a canvas for imagination.”

The Hamilton Unfolded Paper Festival runs through Saturday, April 18, with free admission to all events.
