Cincinnati Reds Stage Dramatic Comeback to Sweep Minnesota Twins

In a thrilling finale to their three-game series, the Cincinnati Reds staged a remarkable late-game rally to defeat the Minnesota Twins 7-4 on Sunday. The Reds’ ninth and tenth innings heroics sealed a dramatic victory, completing a sweep and solidifying their position atop the NL Central standings.

Trailing 3-1 entering the ninth inning, Cincinnati’s offense came alive. Spencer Steer and Tyler Stephenson kicked off the rally with back-to-back singles against Twins reliever Andrew Morris. Dane Myers drew a walk to load the bases, setting the stage for TJ Friedl. With the pressure mounting, Friedl delivered a clutch three-run double, driving the ball to right-center field and giving the Reds a 4-3 lead.

However, the drama was far from over. Minnesota quickly responded in the bottom of the ninth when Austin Martin tied the game with an RBI double off Reds reliever Emilio Pagán, marking Pagán’s second blown save of the season.

The game moved into extra innings, where Cincinnati’s offense continued to shine. In the tenth, Eugenio Suárez hit a grounder that ricocheted off the glove of Twins third baseman Tristan Gray, resulting in an error. Left fielder Austin Martin’s subsequent mishandle of the ball allowed automatic runner Elly De La Cruz to score, putting the Reds back in the lead. Rece Hinds then stepped up with a two-out double, driving in two more runs and giving Cincinnati a comfortable 7-4 advantage.

Reds pitcher Graham Ashcraft closed out the game in the bottom of the tenth, securing his first save of the season and capping off an electrifying comeback.

Minnesota’s early efforts were led by Victor Caratini, who contributed a sacrifice fly in the first inning and an RBI single in the third. Twins starter Bailey Ober was stellar on the mound, allowing just one unearned run over 6 1/3 innings. However, Minnesota’s bats struggled with runners in scoring position, going 6-for-35 throughout the series, ultimately costing them the game.

The Reds’ resilience in close games has been a hallmark of their season. They improved to 11-0 in games decided by three or fewer runs, including a perfect 6-0 record in one-run contests. Sunday’s victory also marked their third extra-inning win of the season, matching their total from last year.

Looking ahead, the Reds will face the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, with right-hander Rhett Lowder (2-1, 3.51 ERA) taking the mound. The Twins, meanwhile, will travel to New York to meet the Mets on Tuesday, with Mick Abel (1-2, 3.98 ERA) slated to start.

Cincinnati’s thrilling win not only showcased their never-say-die attitude but also reinforced their status as a team to watch in the National League.
