Ohio Teen’s Gumball Empire Funds Local Charities, One Quarter at a Time

GRANVILLE, Ohio — What started as a simple gumball machine has turned into a budding philanthropic enterprise for 14-year-old James Browder. The Granville teen is proving that spare change can make a big difference, using his growing vending business to support local causes.

A Quarter-Turn Toward Giving Back

Browder operates multiple gumball and vending machines across Granville, strategically placing them in restaurants, parks, and even his school. But his venture isn’t just about pocket money—20% of the profits go directly to local charities, including the Food Pantry Network and the Granville Education Foundation.

So far, his machines have generated nearly $2,000, with hundreds already donated. For Browder, the real reward is seeing the impact. “It’s so great because I feel like I’m a positive influence in my town,” he said. “I’m benefiting them and just continuing to make a difference.”

Community Embraces the Initiative

At The Lot, a local restaurant, one of Browder’s gumball machines has become a hit. Bartender Jessica Sotkovsky initially didn’t realize the young entrepreneur behind the machine was just a teenager. “I didn’t know he was a kid at first,” she admitted. “But once people found out, it drew even more attention—and more quarters.”

Demand has grown so much that Sotkovsky now stocks four to five times more quarters to keep up with customers. “The kids love it,” she said.

Small Change, Big Impact

Browder’s initiative is a testament to how small efforts can create meaningful change. With two gumball machines already in place and another on the way, he’s expanding his reach—and his charitable contributions.

For now, he’s focused on writing his first checks to local organizations, proving that age isn’t a barrier to making a difference. “I’m just getting started,” Browder said with a smile.

One thing’s certain: in Granville, every quarter dropped into Browder’s machines is helping build a stronger community.
