Somalia and Oman Forge Partnership to Boost Connectivity and Digital Innovation

In a significant move aimed at enhancing regional cooperation, Somalia and Oman have pledged to strengthen ties in transport, communications, and information technology. The agreement, finalized during high-level talks in Muscat, underscores Somalia’s ambitious plans to accelerate its digital transformation and expand economic links with Gulf nations.

Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdisaalam Abdi Ali, met with Oman’s Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali, on Wednesday to discuss ways to improve connectivity and infrastructure development between the two countries. The ministers explored opportunities to expand collaboration in transport services, telecommunications, and information and communications technology (ICT), with a focus on supporting Somalia’s digital transition.

The discussions highlighted Somalia’s vision of becoming a regional hub for commerce, connectivity, and innovation. Both officials agreed to deepen technical cooperation and promote practical initiatives that align with this goal. They also emphasized the importance of fostering private sector participation to unlock trade and investment opportunities between Oman and Somalia.

This partnership comes as Somalia seeks to strengthen its economic and diplomatic ties with Gulf countries, particularly Oman, which has long been a key player in the region. Oman’s expertise in transport and technology sectors is expected to play a pivotal role in helping Somalia modernize its infrastructure and achieve its digital ambitions.

“This collaboration marks a new chapter in our bilateral relations,” Minister Abdisaalam Abdi Ali said during the meeting. “By leveraging Oman’s experience and resources, we aim to create a more connected and technologically advanced Somalia that can serve as a gateway for regional trade and innovation.”

For Oman, the partnership presents an opportunity to expand its influence in the Horn of Africa while contributing to Somalia’s economic revival. Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali emphasized Oman’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s development priorities, stating, “We are keen to share our knowledge and resources to help Somalia achieve its goals. This collaboration will benefit both nations and enhance regional stability.”

The talks in Muscat are part of Somalia’s broader strategy to attract foreign investment and build strategic alliances with Gulf countries. Over the past year, Somalia has intensified efforts to position itself as a key player in East Africa’s economic landscape, focusing on sectors like technology, trade, and infrastructure.

The agreement with Oman is expected to pave the way for joint projects in areas such as port development, digital infrastructure, and telecommunications. These initiatives could significantly boost Somalia’s connectivity with the Gulf region and beyond, attracting more investors and fostering economic growth.

As Somalia continues its journey toward recovery and modernization, partnerships like this one with Oman serve as a testament to the country’s resilience and determination to rebuild after decades of conflict. With a focus on innovation and regional collaboration, Somalia is poised to reclaim its position as a vital hub in East Africa.
