Zimbabwe Football Coach Marian Marinica Resigns After Disappointing AFCON Run
Harare, Zimbabwe – Zimbabwe’s senior men’s national football team is searching for a new leader after head coach Marian Marinica stepped down just five months into his tenure. The Romanian tactician’s resignation follows Zimbabwe’s early exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where the Warriors failed to secure a single victory.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirmed Marinica’s departure in a statement but did not disclose specific reasons behind his exit. However, sources suggest tensions within the squad, particularly a public fallout with vice-captain Marshall Munetsi, may have contributed to the decision.
Interim Leadership Announced
ZIFA has moved quickly to stabilize the team, appointing former Kaizer Chiefs coach Kaitano Tembo as interim head coach. Tembo will lead Zimbabwe in the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in the United Kingdom next month. He will be assisted by Takesure Chiragwi, who returns to the national team setup after resigning last year.
“ZIFA has accepted [Marinica’s] resignation and thanks him for his contribution,” the association said in a statement. “We wish him well in his future endeavors.”
A Controversial Tenure
Marinica’s brief stint was marred by controversy, most notably his decision to drop Munetsi from the AFCON squad—a move that sparked backlash from fans and analysts. The strained relationship between the coach and the squad reportedly worsened during the tournament, where Zimbabwe struggled defensively and failed to advance past the group stage.
With the Warriors now under new leadership, all eyes will be on Tembo and Chiragwi as they prepare for the Unity Cup, a crucial opportunity to rebuild team morale ahead of future qualifiers.
