Ohio Mourns the Loss of Two Firefighters Who Died in the Line of Duty

Ohio is in mourning following the tragic deaths of two firefighters who lost their lives while serving their communities last week. The Ohio State Fire Marshal has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Firefighter John Saunders and Lieutenant Paul Mickolick, both of whom died in separate incidents while on duty.

John Saunders, 41, a dedicated member of the Tri-Community Joint Fire District, perished while battling a house fire in Huron County on April 16. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Fire and Explosion Investigations Bureau, the Huron County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Just two days later, Lieutenant Paul Mickolick, 43, of the Town and Country Fire District, was tragically struck by a vehicle while assisting a stranded driver on Stratton Road in Wayne County. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances of the crash.

State Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon shared heartfelt condolences, emphasizing the profound impact of their loss. “These men were true heroes who dedicated their lives to serving others,” Reardon said. “Their sacrifices are a stark reminder of the dangers firefighters face every day. Words cannot express the depth of our sorrow or our gratitude for their bravery and selflessness.”

In honor of the fallen firefighters, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across public buildings in Huron County, Wayne County, the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes Office Tower.

Firefighter Saunders and Lieutenant Mickolick were respected members of their departments, known for their unwavering commitment to protecting their communities. Their deaths have sent ripples of grief through Ohio’s firefighting community and beyond.

“Both men exemplified the courage and dedication that define firefighters,” Reardon added. “Their legacy will continue to inspire us, and their sacrifices will never be forgotten.”

The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Division is providing support to the families of Saunders and Mickolick, as well as their respective fire departments, during this difficult time.

The loss of these two firefighters underscores the inherent risks of the profession and serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery required to serve on the front lines of public safety.

As investigations into both incidents continue, Ohioans are coming together to honor the memories of these fallen heroes. Their selfless service and ultimate sacrifice will forever be etched in the hearts of those they served.
