NUPENG Vows Improved Welfare and Safety for Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Workers Amid Sector Challenges

A Renewed Focus on Workers’ NeedsChallenges and OptimismA Vital Sector Under Pressure

Nigeria’s oil and gas workers have been promised renewed attention to their welfare, safer working conditions, and stronger representation as the sector grapples with mounting pressures. The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) made the pledge in its May Day 2026 message, aiming to restore hope and rebuild trust among workers in the critical energy industry.

The union acknowledged the immense strain faced by oil and gas workers, who contend with hazardous workplaces, economic hardships, and growing concerns over safety and solidarity. Despite these challenges, NUPENG emphasized the indispensable role these workers play in sustaining Nigeria’s energy supply and driving national development.

“This year’s May Day is more than a celebration of labor; it is a powerful reminder of your resilience, sacrifices, and vital contributions to the Nigerian economy,” said NUPENG President Salimon Oladiti in a heartfelt address. He praised workers for their unwavering commitment in the face of economic pressures, operational risks, and evolving industry challenges.

A Renewed Focus on Workers’ Needs

Under its new leadership, NUPENG has pledged to deliver tangible improvements for its members. These include enhanced welfare packages, stricter safety standards, and more effective advocacy for workers’ rights. The union has committed to becoming more responsive and action-driven, ensuring that the voices of its members are heard and their needs prioritized.

“As a union under renewed leadership, I bring you a message of hope,” Oladiti said. “There is a fresh resolve to prioritize improved welfare, advocate for safer working conditions, and ensure stronger, more effective representation for every member of our great union.”

The union leader urged members to remain united, vigilant, and forward-looking, stressing that the future of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector depends on their professionalism, solidarity, and collective strength. “Together, we will continue to shape policies, defend workers’ rights, and secure a more just and prosperous future,” he added.

Challenges and Optimism

The oil and gas sector, a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy, has faced significant turbulence in recent years. Fluctuating global oil prices, operational inefficiencies, and safety concerns have compounded the challenges for workers. NUPENG’s renewed focus on welfare and safety comes as a much-needed reassurance to those on the frontlines of the industry.

While acknowledging the current difficulties, the union remains optimistic about the future. It reaffirmed its commitment to standing by workers “today and always,” urging them to remain hopeful and resilient as reforms take shape in the sector.

A Vital Sector Under Pressure

The oil and gas industry employs millions of Nigerians and contributes substantially to the nation’s GDP. However, workers often operate in high-risk environments, facing hazards ranging from equipment failures to environmental dangers. Economic pressures, including rising inflation and stagnant wages, have further exacerbated their struggles.

NUPENG’s renewed pledge to address these issues signals a critical step toward improving conditions for the workforce that powers Nigeria’s energy sector. The union’s emphasis on safety, welfare, and stronger representation reflects a broader recognition that the well-being of workers is integral to the sector’s stability and growth.

As Nigeria navigates the complexities of its energy industry, NUPENG’s commitment to its members offers a ray of hope for those who continue to drive the nation’s economic engine. Their resilience and dedication remain vital to ensuring a sustainable future for the sector and the country at large.
