Rising Prom Costs Threaten Accessibility, But Cincinnati Nonprofit Offers Hope
For many high school seniors, prom is a cherished rite of passage—a night of glamour, celebration, and unforgettable memories. However, as expenses soar, the dream of attending prom is slipping out of reach for families grappling with financial hardships.
A recent analysis highlighted by The Washington Post reveals that prom costs are climbing sharply, with dresses alone costing 10% more this year. Add to that the rising prices for suits, hair, makeup, transportation, tickets, and meals, and the total expense can easily exceed hundreds of dollars.
In Cincinnati, one nonprofit is stepping up to ensure that financial barriers don’t keep students from experiencing this milestone. Kenzie’s Closet, now celebrating its 20th prom season, provides dresses, shoes, accessories, and even alterations—all free of charge—to help students attend prom without financial strain.
A Lifeline for Families
Heather Batdorf, a representative for Kenzie’s Closet, explains the organization’s mission: “Prom is expensive. You have tickets, hair, nails, makeup, transportation—it adds up quickly. At Kenzie’s Closet, we help by providing everything a student needs to feel confident and beautiful on prom night.”
Since its founding, Kenzie’s Closet has helped more than 7,500 students across the tri-state area. Each participant is paired with a personal shopper, many of whom are former recipients returning to give back.
A Transformative Experience
For Jahmina Brunner, a senior at Banyan High School, Kenzie’s Closet offered more than just a dress—it provided a moment of empowerment. Banyan High School serves students pursuing nontraditional paths to graduation, making prom an especially meaningful opportunity.
“This makes me feel like a whole princess,” Brunner shared. “It really boosted my confidence.” Initially unsure about the dress she’d choose, Brunner ultimately found one that made her feel ready to shine on prom night.
“It’s something I can tell my kids about, my grandkids about,” she added. “Something I can look back on and be like, ‘Oh yeah, I ate that.’”
Community Support Drives Success
Kenzie’s Closet relies entirely on community donations and fundraising efforts. Dresses are donated by individuals and organizations, while funds are raised through events like galas and partnerships with local businesses.
“We’re always trying to raise funds,” Batdorf said. “It really takes the community to make something like this happen.”
As the organization marks its 20th anniversary, its impact continues to grow. Beyond prom, Kenzie’s Closet also offers the Bright Light Student Scholarship, assisting students with their next steps after graduation.
A Night to Remember
For many students, prom is more than just a dance—it’s a celebration of perseverance, friendship, and achievement. Kenzie’s Closet ensures that financial challenges don’t overshadow this milestone, offering students a chance to create lasting memories.
As prom season approaches, the nonprofit’s work serves as a reminder of the power of community and generosity in transforming lives—one dress at a time.
