Azare, Bauchi State – The Hisbah Command in Bauchi State’s Katagum Zone has arrested seven men linked to an alleged wife-swapping group operating in Azare, the headquarters of Katagum Local Government Area.
The suspects, reportedly members of a group called Wuddadu, were detained following complaints from residents and intelligence gathered by Islamic moral police. Authorities described the group’s activities as a violation of religious and societal norms.
Moral Outrage and Arrests
Zonal Hisbah Commander Ridwan Khairan confirmed the arrests, stating the men engaged in “immoral conduct” by exchanging wives under the guise of temporary marriages.
“This behavior contradicts Islamic teachings and community values,” Khairan told reporters. “We acted on credible reports and will not tolerate such acts.”
The arrests were carried out by Operation Ko Ba Kobo, a Hisbah enforcement unit, after a raid on the group’s hideout. Khairan dismissed claims by some suspects that a “divine dream” sanctioned their actions, stressing that Islamic law only recognizes properly conducted marriages.
Group Leader Speaks Out
Sagir Bashir, leader of the Wuddadu group, distanced the organization from the scandal, saying members had been warned repeatedly over two years.
“We reported this to Hisbah to protect our community’s morals,” Bashir said. “Those involved acted on personal misguidance, not our teachings.”
He warned that any member caught in similar acts would face expulsion.
Suspects Express Regret
During interrogation, one suspect claimed recurring dreams led him to believe the practice was permissible. Hisbah officials rejected the justification as baseless.
The wives involved reportedly admitted participation, saying they were persuaded by their husbands. Both suspects and their spouses pleaded for leniency, vowing not to repeat the offense.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities are considering further legal and corrective measures to prevent recurrence. Khairan commended local groups, including Jama’atu Izalatul Bid’a Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) and the Guddiri Youths Forum, for aiding enforcement efforts.
The case has sparked debate over morality and religious compliance in the region, with Hisbah urging residents to uphold Islamic principles.
