Ethiopia’s Economic Reforms Attract Zimbabwean Investors as Historic Ties Deepen
By Nexio News
Ethiopia’s sweeping economic reforms are catching the attention of Zimbabwean investors, signaling a new chapter in the two nations’ long-standing partnership. Ambassador Rashid Mohammed, Ethiopia’s envoy to Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mauritius, and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), revealed growing business interest during an exclusive interview with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA).
A Gateway for Investment
Ethiopia’s investor-friendly policies, improving business climate, and strategic position as an African trade hub are drawing Zimbabwean entrepreneurs eager to tap into its emerging market. Ambassador Mohammed highlighted key sectors ripe for collaboration, including agriculture, manufacturing, mining, tourism, and technology.
“Ethiopia’s reforms are unlocking fresh opportunities,” he said, pointing to the country’s role in regional trade blocs like COMESA and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). These agreements, he added, are boosting confidence among Zimbabwean firms looking to expand into East Africa.
From Liberation to Economic Partnership
The diplomatic bond between Ethiopia and Zimbabwe traces back to the 1960s–1980s, when Ethiopia backed Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle against British colonial rule. Financial aid and military training from Addis Ababa became a cornerstone of Pan-African solidarity.
“Ethiopia’s support during our fight for independence remains a powerful symbol of African unity,” Ambassador Mohammed noted. After Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, both nations swiftly established embassies and deepened ties through the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU).
Trade and Tourism Gains
Recent years have seen economic collaboration flourish. Ethiopian leather manufacturers showcased products at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, forging new commercial links. Meanwhile, Ethiopian Airlines—operating 23 weekly flights to three Zimbabwean cities—has become a vital bridge for trade and tourism.
COMESA’s sponsorship of Ethiopian exhibitors at the trade fair underscores the bloc’s role in fostering intra-African commerce. Ethiopia’s representation in the COMESA Court of Justice further solidifies its regional influence.
The Road Ahead
With shared values and a commitment to African integration, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe are poised to elevate their partnership. Ambassador Mohammed emphasized the potential for joint ventures in agriculture, aviation, and technology, driven by private-sector engagement.
As Ethiopia’s reforms gain momentum and Zimbabwean investors seize the opportunities, the two nations are rewriting their historic alliance into a modern economic success story.
