Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — Ethiopia’s rapid development progress took center stage during high-level talks between President Taye Atske-Selassie and United Nations officials on Thursday. The discussions, held at the National Palace, focused on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthening partnerships between Ethiopia and the global body.

Li Junhua, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, led the visiting delegation from the High-Level Advisory Board on Economic and Social Affairs. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, he praised Ethiopia’s growth trajectory, calling it a model for other developing nations.

“Ethiopia’s achievements in urban transformation and economic progress are remarkable,” Li said. “The country’s experience provides critical lessons for others working toward sustainable development.”

A Blueprint for Developing Nations

The talks underscored Ethiopia’s role as a key player in Africa’s development landscape. Li emphasized that the UN remains committed to supporting Ethiopia and other African nations in meeting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He also signaled the UN’s interest in shaping a post-2030 global framework with input from African leaders.

Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), echoed these sentiments, pointing to Ethiopia’s historic contributions to global economic policy. He noted that Addis Ababa’s hosting of the 2015 International Conference on Financing for Development solidified its reputation as a diplomatic and economic hub.

“Ethiopia’s leadership has been instrumental in driving progress,” Gatete said. “The visible transformation in Addis Ababa reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive growth.”

Addis Ababa’s Urban Renaissance

The UN delegation expressed particular admiration for the capital’s rapid modernization, including infrastructure upgrades and urban renewal projects. Under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration, the city has seen major investments in transportation, housing, and green spaces—a shift that has drawn international attention.

President Taye Atske-Selassie reiterated Ethiopia’s dedication to the SDGs, emphasizing the need for continued global cooperation. “Our progress is a collective effort,” he said. “We welcome partnerships that amplify our development goals.”

What’s Next for Ethiopia and the UN?

With the 2030 deadline for the SDGs approaching, Ethiopia’s collaboration with the UN is expected to deepen. The discussions also touched on post-2030 strategies, ensuring that Africa’s priorities remain central to future global development plans.

As the delegation wrapped up its visit, officials signaled optimism about Ethiopia’s potential to inspire similar progress across the continent. For now, the country’s success story serves as both a milestone and a challenge—to sustain momentum while sharing its strategies with the world.
