Kisumu Flood Crisis: Homes Submerged, Roads Cut Off as Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc

Kisumu, Kenya — Overnight torrential rains have plunged parts of Kisumu County into chaos, with flash floods submerging homes, paralyzing transport, and forcing desperate families to flee rising waters. The worst-hit areas include Nyando, Kisumu East, Kisumu Central, and Nyakach, where residents now fear the Nyando River could burst its banks, compounding the disaster.

Families Stranded as Floodwaters Rise

Entire neighborhoods woke up to submerged houses and impassable roads Monday morning, leaving many trapped. In Nyando, floodwaters swept through homesteads, cutting off access and stranding families. Schools remained empty as children couldn’t navigate the deluge.

“This flash flood is destroying everything. Roads are underwater, and people can’t move,” said Dickson Odhiambo, a local resident. “Children couldn’t even go to school today.”

In Kisumu East, areas like Manyatta, Nyalenda, Mowlem, and Dunga faced severe flooding after streams feeding into Lake Victoria overflowed. Edward Odhiambo, a Mowlem resident, described a dire scene: “Our homes are already flooded. If the rain doesn’t stop, more families will have to abandon everything.”

Criticism Over Delayed Response

Angry residents accuse both county and national authorities of failing to act swiftly. Many say they’ve received no assistance despite the escalating crisis.

“We’re on our own,” one resident lamented. “No help has come, even as people lose their homes and belongings.”

Local leaders are pleading for intervention. Nyalenda B MCA James Were urged the government and aid groups to step in immediately. “Families are stranded and losing everything. We need emergency support before this gets worse,” he warned.

Meteorological Warnings Ignored?

The Kenya Meteorological Department had earlier predicted heavy rainfall across the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and western Kenya. Officials cautioned that low-lying areas, including Kisumu, were at high risk of flooding.

Despite these warnings, disaster response teams had yet to release official figures on displaced families or property damage by Monday morning. Authorities are now urging residents in flood-prone zones to relocate to safer ground.

What’s Next?

With more rain forecasted, fears are growing that the Nyando River could overflow, triggering a larger humanitarian crisis. Community leaders are scrambling to organize temporary shelters, but resources remain scarce.

For now, displaced families are left waiting—hoping for relief as the waters keep rising.
