INEC Calls for 1.4 Million NYSC Members to Secure Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

Electoral body says corps members are “irreplaceable” for credible polls, plans massive deployment across 176,846 polling units.
Abuja, Nigeria — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally requested the deployment of over 1.4 million National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to ensure the smooth conduct of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan made the announcement during a meeting with NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu in Abuja, describing corps members as the “heartbeat” of Nigeria’s electoral process.
Why NYSC Members Are Critical
Amupitan emphasized that NYSC members bring neutrality, education, and public trust to polling units—qualities he called “irreplaceable.”
“When we talk about election manpower, we’re talking about your corps members,” he told NYSC officials. “They are the most dedicated and patriotic staff we have. Their presence reassures voters and safeguards democracy.”
The breakdown of INEC’s 2027 deployment plan includes:
- 707,384 corps members for the Presidential and National Assembly elections (January 16, 2027).
- Another 707,384 for Governorship and State Assembly polls (February 6, 2027).
- 52,446 additional personnel for off-cycle elections in Ekiti, Osun, Nasarawa, Enugu, Rivers, Ondo, Kebbi, and Kano.
This marks a significant increase from the 2023 elections, where INEC relied on 1.2 million ad hoc staff, with 70% (850,000) being NYSC members and student volunteers.
Safety and Welfare Concerns
Amupitan acknowledged the risks corps members face, particularly in volatile regions, and pledged improved insurance and welfare packages.
“These young Nigerians didn’t just facilitate voting—they protected the sanctity of the ballot in 176,846 polling units, including the most challenging terrains,” he said.
Gen Z to Boost Digital Voting
NYSC’s Brigadier General Nafiu noted that the incoming wave of Generation Z corps members—known for their tech skills—will enhance INEC’s digital voting systems.
“The last millennials are exiting the NYSC soon, making way for digitally savvy Gen Z members,” Nafiu said. “This aligns perfectly with INEC’s tech-driven accreditation processes.”
Upcoming Test Runs
Before 2027, INEC will conduct trial runs during Ekiti’s June 2026 and Osun’s August 2026 governorship elections—critical tests for new electoral innovations.
Both INEC and NYSC reaffirmed their partnership, first formalized in 2011, ensuring Nigeria’s elections remain credible and efficient.
