African Union Chairperson Reaffirms Support for Guinea’s Transition During Meeting with President Doumbouya in Nairobi
In a significant diplomatic engagement on the sidelines of the Africa-France Summit in Nairobi, African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf met with Guinea’s President, H.E. General Mamady Doumbouya, on November 24, 2023. The high-level discussions focused on Guinea’s ongoing transition process and its role in fostering regional stability in West Africa and the Sahel.
During the meeting, Chairperson Youssouf reiterated the AU’s unwavering support for Guinea’s transition, emphasizing the importance of constructive dialogue and collaboration with neighboring nations. He praised Guinea’s commitment to regional cooperation and encouraged continued efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
“The AU stands firmly behind Guinea as it navigates this critical transitional period,” Youssouf stated. “We applaud the government’s efforts to engage constructively with its neighbors and its dedication to strengthening regional partnerships.”
President Doumbouya expressed gratitude for the AU’s support and commended Chairperson Youssouf’s leadership in advancing the continent’s shared goals. He highlighted Guinea’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and fostering unity during this pivotal phase.
“The AU’s guidance has been invaluable as we work towards stability and progress for our people,” Doumbouya said. “We remain dedicated to ensuring a smooth and inclusive transition that benefits all Guineans.”
The meeting comes at a crucial time for Guinea, which has been undergoing significant political changes since President Doumbouya assumed power in September 2021 following a military coup. The transitional government has since pledged to restore democratic governance and has engaged in efforts to strengthen ties with regional and international partners.
The Africa-France Summit, held in Nairobi, Kenya, provided a platform for leaders across the continent to discuss pressing issues, including political stability, economic development, and security challenges. Guinea’s participation underscored its active role in regional affairs and its commitment to collaborative solutions.
West Africa and the Sahel have faced mounting security and political challenges in recent years, including threats from extremist groups and political instability in several nations. Guinea’s efforts to maintain peace and stability amid these challenges have been widely acknowledged by the AU and other international stakeholders.
The AU’s continued backing of Guinea’s transition process highlights the organization’s commitment to supporting member states through periods of political change. Chairperson Youssouf’s remarks also underscored the broader goals of promoting unity, security, and development across the continent.
As Guinea moves forward in its transition, the AU’s support remains a cornerstone of its efforts to achieve lasting stability and prosperity. The meeting between Youssouf and Doumbouya symbolises the collaborative spirit that defines Africa’s approach to addressing regional challenges.
