South African President Ramaphosa Vows to Stay in Office Despite Impeachment Inquiry

Johannesburg, South Africa – President Cyril Ramaphosa has firmly rejected calls for his resignation following a landmark Constitutional Court ruling that revives an impeachment inquiry into allegations of misconduct. In a televised address to the nation, Ramaphosa acknowledged the court’s decision but insisted he would not step down, calling the process a constitutional safeguard rather than a verdict.

Court Ruling Revives Impeachment Process

Last week, South Africa’s highest court found flaws in parliamentary rules governing presidential removal, effectively reopening a 2022 investigation into Ramaphosa’s conduct. The case stems from a 2020 theft at his private farm, where large sums of undeclared foreign currency were stolen. An independent panel later concluded there was prima facie evidence that Ramaphosa may have violated the constitution by failing to report the incident and potentially misusing state resources.

Despite the panel’s findings, the National Assembly initially voted against an impeachment committee in December 2022. The Constitutional Court has now overturned that decision, ordering lawmakers to revisit the matter under revised procedures.

Ramaphosa: “I Will Not Resign”

In his address, Ramaphosa emphasized his respect for the judiciary but maintained his innocence. “The court made no finding against me,” he said. “Resigning now would undermine our constitution and reward those who seek chaos over due process.”

He confirmed plans to legally challenge the panel’s report, calling it “flawed” and based on “hearsay.” His legal team argues the inquiry misapplied its mandate and reached unfounded conclusions.

Political and Public Reaction

The ruling has deepened divisions in South Africa’s political landscape. Opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters, have intensified demands for Ramaphosa’s resignation, framing the inquiry as a test of accountability. Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) has largely rallied behind him, fearing instability ahead of 2024 elections.

Public opinion remains split. Some citizens view the inquiry as a necessary check on power, while others see it as a distraction from pressing crises like unemployment and rolling blackouts.

Broader Implications for South Africa

The case underscores South Africa’s fragile balance between accountability and political stability. Ramaphosa, who came to power vowing to root out corruption after the scandal-plagued Zuma era, now faces scrutiny over his own ethical record.

He defended his administration’s progress, citing recovered stolen funds, prosecutions of graft, and economic reforms. “We are rebuilding,” he said. “This moment must not derail our nation’s recovery.”

What Comes Next?

Parliament must now convene an impeachment committee to evaluate the panel’s findings. Legal experts say the process could take months, with Ramaphosa’s review application likely to delay proceedings further.

For now, the president remains steadfast. “I will complete my mandate,” he declared. “South Africa’s future depends on upholding the rule of law—not shortcuts.”
