AKRON, Ohio — A small plane crashed into a residential home in Akron on Thursday afternoon, killing two people aboard the aircraft and prompting a multi-agency response.
The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. at 2238 Canterbury Circle, where the Piper Cherokee PA-28-180, a single-engine aircraft, struck the property. The Akron Division of Fire reported heavy black smoke and flames engulfing the home. Nearby residences at 2238 and 2240 Canterbury Circle were evacuated, but no injuries were reported among residents.
Fatalities Confirmed
The two victims, whose identities have not yet been released, were found inside the wreckage of the plane. Authorities confirmed the aircraft had departed from Akron Fulton Airport, located close to the crash site.
Lt. Michael Murphy of the Akron Police Department stated that the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) has taken over the investigation. In an official release, OSHP identified the plane as a 1963 Piper Cherokee registered under tail number N7811W and owned by Eco Aviation.
NTSB, FAA Join Investigation
By Friday, investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) had arrived at the scene, working alongside the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local agencies.
“The crash remains an active investigation,” OSHP said in a statement. “Troopers, local law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel continue to assess the scene. Residents are encouraged to avoid the area while emergency crews remain on site.”
Flight School Responds
American Winds College of Aeronautics, based at Akron Fulton Airport, addressed the crash in a social media post, clarifying that none of their aircraft or personnel were involved.
“We would like to let our staff, students, and families know all of our airplanes are safe,” the post read. “We ask you to say some prayers for all involved.”
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the crash. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
