Nigeria and US Jointly Eliminate Top ISIS Commander in Lake Chad Basin Operation
In a landmark counter-terrorism collaboration, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has confirmed the successful joint operation between Nigeria and the United States that led to the elimination of a high-ranking ISIS commander. The operation, which took place in the Lake Chad Basin area, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the region.
The ISIS leader, identified as Abubakar Mainok, also known as Abu-Bilal al-Mainuki, was declared a “global terrorist” by the US in 2023. Mainok, originally from Mainok town in Borno State, Nigeria, served as ISIS’s second-in-command globally, making his removal a critical blow to the terrorist organization.
President Tinubu hailed the operation as a testament to the strong partnership between Nigeria and the US. “Overnight, Nigeria and the United States recorded a significant example of effective collaboration in the fight against terrorism,” Tinubu stated. “Our determined Nigerian Armed Forces, working closely with the Armed Forces of the United States, conducted a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State.”
The US involvement was first announced by former President Donald Trump, who described the mission as “meticulously planned and very complex.” According to reports, the operation targeted Mainok’s compound in the Lake Chad Basin, resulting in the elimination of the ISIS commander and several of his associates.
The Lake Chad Basin has long been a hotspot for terrorist activities, with groups like ISIS and Boko Haram exploiting the region’s porous borders and challenging terrain. The success of this operation underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing the complex security challenges posed by these groups.
President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the US for its support in the operation. “Nigeria appreciates this partnership with the United States in advancing our shared security objectives,” he said. “I extend my sincere gratitude to President Trump for his leadership and unwavering support in this effort.”
The elimination of Mainok is expected to disrupt ISIS operations in the region, though experts caution that the group remains resilient and adaptive. Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to eradicating terrorism, stating, “I commend the personnel involved on both sides for their professionalism and courage, and I look forward to more decisive strikes against all terrorist enclaves across the nation.”
This operation highlights the growing importance of international alliances in combating global terrorism. For Nigeria, which has faced persistent threats from Boko Haram and ISIS-affiliated groups, the collaboration with the US represents a crucial step toward enhancing regional security.
As the dust settles on this successful mission, questions remain about the long-term impact of Mainok’s death on ISIS operations in Africa. However, the operation serves as a powerful reminder of the effectiveness of coordinated, cross-border efforts in the fight against terrorism.
