Johnmary Ssebuufu Wins Endorsement for KCCA Speaker Role Amid Political Resilience

Kampala, Uganda—The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially endorsed Johnmary Ssebuufu as its candidate for the position of Speaker of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) council. The decision follows a closely contested internal vote held at the party’s headquarters, where Ssebuufu emerged victorious with 11 votes against his rival Godfrey Luyombya, who secured 8.

In the same session, Olivia Namazzi was endorsed for the role of Deputy Speaker, signaling the party’s strategic push to strengthen its leadership within the city’s governance framework. The endorsement marks a significant political milestone for Ssebuufu, who has faced considerable challenges in recent months but remains a prominent figure in Kampala’s political landscape.

Ssebuufu’s journey to this endorsement has been anything but smooth. Earlier this year, he was reportedly abducted by unidentified individuals, an incident that sparked widespread outrage among opposition supporters and human rights groups. After months of detention, he was eventually produced in court and released, though the details of his ordeal remain shrouded in mystery.

NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi condemned the abduction at the time, accusing security agencies of targeting opposition figures. “This continued targeting and illegal detention of our members must stop. Ugandans deserve justice and respect for their rights regardless of political affiliation,” Ssenyonyi asserted. He further characterized the incident as part of a broader pattern of intimidation and persecution against opposition leaders and their supporters.

Despite these challenges, Ssebuufu has maintained his political momentum, earning strong support within the party, particularly among constituents in Nakawa Division. His resilience has solidified his reputation as a steadfast advocate for his community and a capable leader within the NUP ranks.

During the endorsement exercise, party leaders and delegates from across Kampala expressed confidence in Ssebuufu’s ability to lead the KCCA council. “He has shown remarkable courage and dedication to our cause. We believe he is the right person to steer the council forward,” said one attendee.

The NUP’s endorsement process underscores its commitment to consolidating its influence within Kampala’s governance structures. With Ssebuufu and Namazzi at the helm, the party aims to champion its agenda and address pressing issues facing the city’s residents.

As the KCCA speaker election approaches, all eyes will be on Ssebuufu’s campaign and the broader political dynamics in Kampala. His candidacy represents not only a personal triumph but also a test of the NUP’s growing influence in Uganda’s political arena.
