Ohio Braces for Busy Memorial Day Travel Despite Soaring Gas Prices
As Memorial Day weekend approaches, nearly 1.7 million Ohioans are expected to travel 50 miles or more, mirroring last year’s numbers despite rising fuel costs and economic concerns.
AAA’s latest forecast reveals that road trips remain the most popular choice, even with Ohio’s average gas price hitting $4.54 per gallon—a staggering $1.48 increase compared to 2025.
Travel Trends: Fewer Flights, More Trains and Buses
Between Thursday, May 21, and Monday, May 25, an estimated 1.52 million Ohioans will drive to their destinations, while 90,201 will fly—a slight dip from last year. However, alternative travel methods like buses, trains, and cruises have seen a 5% surge, with 73,699 travelers opting for these options.
Nationally, the numbers are even higher: 45 million Americans are projected to travel, with 87% (39.1 million) driving, 3.66 million flying, and 2.22 million using other transportation.
Why Are Gas Prices So High?
Morgan Dean, AAA Club Alliance’s Public and Government Affairs manager, attributes the spike in fuel costs to global tensions, particularly the Iran conflict, which has disrupted crude oil supplies.
“Drivers are feeling the pinch at the pump,” Dean said. “These prices are the highest we’ve seen in four years, and it’s directly tied to instability in the oil market.”
Best and Worst Times to Hit the Road
To avoid gridlock, AAA suggests planning trips carefully. Based on data from INRIX, peak congestion in Ohio is expected:
- Thursday & Friday (May 21-22): 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Monday (May 25): Afternoon hours
Sunday is predicted to be the lightest travel day, offering smoother rides for those returning home.
What’s Driving the Travel Trends?
Despite economic uncertainty, Americans are prioritizing holiday getaways, though many are adjusting their plans. The steady travel numbers suggest that while budgets are tighter, people are still willing to spend on experiences—just more cautiously.
For those hitting the road, AAA advises checking vehicle conditions, packing emergency supplies, and monitoring traffic updates to minimize delays.
As Ohio gears up for a bustling holiday weekend, travelers are reminded to stay safe, plan ahead, and expect higher costs—especially at the gas pump.
