Liberia’s CDC Launches Grassroots Mobilization Drive in Bong County Ahead of 2029 Elections
GBARNGA, Liberia – The opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has kicked off an ambitious grassroots campaign in Liberia’s Bong County, aiming to solidify its support base nearly six years before the next presidential election.
Over the weekend, party officials launched the CDC Identification Card and One Dollar Due Payment initiative in Gbarnga, marking the start of a countywide effort to register members, renew loyalty, and bolster financial backing for the party.
Rebuilding from the Ground Up
James Zuannah, Bong County CDC Chairman, told a crowd of supporters that the initiative is designed to create a more organized and accountable political institution.
“In any organization, membership must be verified,” Zuannah said. “That’s why we’re ensuring every CDCian pays their dues and gets registered. This strengthens our party’s foundation.”
Despite logistical hurdles—including poor road conditions—Zuannah noted strong turnout at the launch, signaling growing enthusiasm for the CDC in the region. He acknowledged that registration could take several days as teams reach remote villages.
“Bong County is vast, and many people still want to join or renew their membership,” he said. “We’ll cover every district, town, and major village—no community will be left behind.”
Digital Overhaul for Membership Tracking
A key feature of the campaign is the introduction of a digital registration system, a first for the county chapter. Zuannah revealed that when his leadership took over, the party had no formal records of members or activities.
“We inherited an office with no documents,” he admitted. “Going digital ensures transparency—every registration and payment will be tracked in real time.”
The system will allow national CDC leaders, including former President George Weah, to monitor progress remotely. Zuannah emphasized that the upgrade would prevent the administrative disarray that plagued the party in the past.
Local Support Over National Reliance
While acknowledging assistance from D. Maxwell Saah Kemayah of the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE), Zuannah stressed that Bong County’s CDC branch is prioritizing self-sufficiency.
“We won’t wait for Monrovia or former President Weah to develop our structures,” he said. “Our supporters are stepping up—look at how we’ve renovated our headquarters already.”
He urged members to contribute the symbolic one-dollar dues, obtain ID cards, and engage in party decision-making. “Pay your dues, have a voice—this party belongs to all of us,” he declared.
Weah’s 2029 Comeback Predicted
Zuannah made a bold prediction, calling Weah—Liberia’s president from 2018 to 2024—the CDC’s “president-in-waiting” for 2029.
“My statement stands: President Weah will return to power, and Liberia will be different,” he asserted.
The remarks come as opposition parties ramp up early preparations for the next election cycle, signaling a fiercely contested race ahead.
