University of Dayton Awarded $1.3 Million to Boost STEM Scholarships
DAYTON, Ohio — The University of Dayton has secured a $1.3 million grant from Ohio’s Choose Ohio First program to recruit and graduate more students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. The funding will support scholarships aimed at preparing students for high-demand careers in the state’s growing STEM workforce.
Since 2019, the university has received over $11 million from the initiative, which is managed by the Ohio Department of Higher Education. Each year, 15 scholarships are awarded to students pursuing degrees in biochemistry, pre-medicine, engineering, and other STEM disciplines.
Bridging the Gap Between Education and Workforce Needs
The Choose Ohio First program is designed to strengthen Ohio’s talent pipeline by making STEM education more accessible.
“These grants help students afford a University of Dayton education while gaining hands-on experience in high-demand fields—without the burden of working extra hours to pay for school,” said Darlene Weaver, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the university.
For students like Alex York, a civil engineering major, the financial support has been transformative.
“The scholarship has reduced financial stress, letting me focus on coursework and internships that are crucial in engineering,” York said. “It’s also allowed me to join student organizations and develop leadership skills, making me a more well-rounded, career-ready engineer.”
A Longstanding Commitment to STEM Growth
The University of Dayton has been a key beneficiary of Choose Ohio First, using previous funds to expand STEM enrollment and retention. The latest award ensures that more students can pursue degrees in fields critical to Ohio’s economic future.
With industries increasingly relying on STEM talent, programs like this ensure graduates are prepared to meet workforce demands—while making higher education more affordable.
